Draco stared at Dumbledore, but he didn't speak. He wasn't quite sure to reply to that, so he just stayed quiet and glanced briefly at Hermione. Tears were shining in her eyes, but she, too, seemed speechless. Dumbledore kept his eyes on Draco only and began speaking once more.

"Listen, Mr. Malfoy," he said, his eyes still twinkling, "I know you haven't always liked me, and, indeed, you may well still despise me."

Draco stared at him, astonished. "Well, sir," he stuttured. "It's not necessarily that I don't like you...my father always told me...." He suddenly trailed off, looking hopelessly at the old man with the tall, skinny stature.

Dumbledore put up a hand and waved it away, as though none of what Draco had said needed to matter. "That is all in the past, after all," he said through his long white beard. He gazed at Draco once more and commenced again. "I want to do everything I can to fulfill your wishes of protection for yourself and those who have aided in keeping you safe." Hermione breathed an audible sigh of relief, and Dumbledore, who had heard her, smiled at her. "I assure you, I can keep you all safe. Voldemort was always very fearful of me for some reason anyway," Dumbledore said. He noticed that Draco had flinched at the name.

"What is the matter, Mr. Malfoy?" Dumbledore asked.

Draco cleared his throat, "Er, I just rarely hear anyone say his name...anyone but him."

Hermione looked at the boy who had grown into a man; this man had come to be one of her very best friends these days. She thought about the fact that Draco had probably stared Voldemort in the eyes before; he had probably felt the fear surging through him as Voldemort made everything but empty threats to him and his family. She pictured, for the first time, Draco mustering up the courage to run away forever, to leave his family, and to leave Voldemort. Suddenly, tears streaked silently down her cheeks.

"Saying the name is brave," she found herself saying, "But you're brave too, Draco." He stared at her, apparently wondering what she was talking about. She elaborated, "You had the courage to leave your family to try and find a better, safer life for yourself."

Dumbledore, who had been listening to Hermione speak, said suddenly, "Ms. Granger is right of course. It was a very brave and noble thing to do. It is even more noble that you have sucked up your pride and are here talking to me now." Draco stared at the man, again astonished that he realized how painful it was to ask anyone, especially Dumbledore, for help. "Mr. Malfoy," Dumbledore began again, "You must remember that I know your father. I know how he has raised you; I am quite familiar with the traditional Malfoy pride and arrogance."

Draco, once again, did not know what to say to this. He just sat still and waited for what else this remarkable man had to say. He wondered why his father hated him so; probably because Albus Dumbledore was far superior to the man that his father was and would ever be. Draco had witnessed this in just a few short minutes of being unbiased towards Dumbledore.

"There are many spells I can cast upon you, the Weasleys, Mr. Potter, and Ms. Granger to ensure your upmost safety. I will do everything possible. First, however, we must get everyone here. Fawkes," he said, summoning his large phoenix towards him. He got a piece of parchment, divided it in half and scribbled a note on one. With a tap of his wand, a copy of his words appeared on the other parchment. "Take this one," he said to his bird, motioning to one parchment, "To the seventh year Gryffindor boys' dormitories, and give it to either Harry Potter or Ronald Weasley. As for the other," he said, pointing to the other piece, "Take it to the sixth year Gryffindor girls' dormitories and give it directly to Ginny Weasley." Fawkes gave a sweep of his wings, and he was off, soaring with elegance.

"Just a moment, if you please," Dumbledore said politely to Draco and Hermione. He walked to his fireplace, made a swift movement, and green flames erupted into it. He stuck his head in and said, "The Burrow!" Mrs. Weasley's bustiling voice could be heard at the other end.

"Oh, Professor Dumbledore!" she exclaimed, "What brings you here?"

"Business regarding Draco Malfoy," Dumbledore said, crouching into the grate.

"Oh," Mrs. Weasley said. Hermione could imagine the look of shock that was probably etched across her sweet, motherly face.

"No trouble, Molly, but we need to have a meeting. Please bring all of your children tonight to Hogwarts. The gates will be unlocked. Apparate into Hogsmeade. All of your children, and Arthur please...I must go now. Good day, Molly." Dumbledore stumbled out of the grate, wiping ash of his face.

"Meet me back here tonight at seven o'clock sharp. Bring with you no one except Harry, Ron, and Ginny. Have a good day, and do be safe."

Wow!!! Theyb all best be safe, or i will.....um.....i dont know. Lol!!!!1

“Well,” said Hermione, sighing, “This should be interesting. We have to get Ron to come along with you.” She punched her friend lightly on the arm and smiled at him. “I’m sure we can manage.” Draco looked unsure, but he didn’t say anything. As the two headed back to the Heads’ common room, a million thoughts were circulating through his blonde head.

What if this doesn’t work? What if the Dark Lord comes for us still, and what if he gets through Dumbledore’s charms? No, stupid. Dumbledore is too powerful! He must be…the Dark Lord is even afraid of him! What are you worrying about? At seven o’clock tonight, everything will be okay for everyone….

Draco was shocked to find himself at their common room already. Apparently his feet had been carrying him subconsciously while his mind was elsewhere. Hermione was looking at him apprehensively, but she didn’t say anything.

Meanwhile, Harry and Ginny were sitting together, having just woken up. Ron could be seen stretching and walking sleepily down the stairs. “Dumbledore’s phoenix,” he said, yawning, “Was at our window. I expect it’s for you, Harry.” Harry took the parchment from Ron.

Harry read it aloud to Ron and Ginny quietly. Sure enough, when he looked over to the common room window, Fawkes was there. He opened the window quickly and the great, majestic phoenix flew in, perching himself on the arm of the sofa where Ginny still sat. He gave her the letter and flew out again. Ginny read it, and she, too, had been told to go to Dumbledore’s office that night.

“Wonder what that’s about?” Ginny asked, hugging Harry as he sat down with her once more. Ron shrugged.

“Who knows? I’m starving though; let’s go down for some breakfast,” he said, tussling his fire red hair.
