<3<3<3<3<3<3<3 Normal POV <3<3<3<3<3<3<3

The next few days at Hogwarts were rather tense. Hermione and Ron hadn’t been speaking, and both seemed to be teetering on the edge of leaving the other. Ron felt betrayed since Hermione, who had said they were okay, was acting completely angry. Hermione felt angry, well obviously because Ron was acting like a jealous git.

On top of all this, which alone made Hermione feel as though she was going to crack, she had schoolwork and Head Girl duties. She had to patrol the corridors late at night, making sure that students were in bed by curfew and such. Draco made it a little better. Since the corridors were almost always deserted, the two were able to be friends openly. They’d talk about several things. Draco would marvel on the fact that Hermione wasn’t obsessed with Quidditch. Hermione would marvel on the fact that Draco actually liked Professor Snape. And, of course, the two talked about Hermione and Ron.

One especially boring night of patrol duty, the two were talking about just that. They had found themselves in the Astronomy Tower, atop the highest rooftop of Hogwarts. They had become unusually bored with their duties and decided if anyone asked what they were doing up there, they’d say they heard a lot of ruckus from this direction.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I love him so much, but it honestly seems like he could care less these days,” Hermione said hopelessly. “Summer was so good. Then he suddenly just turned into a jealous maniac. I don’t even know what got him started. He was fine the whole time you were there. It was really only at the end that he got like that!”

“I know,” said Draco, staring off into nowhere. He, too, had wondered several times what had gotten into Ron at the end of the summer. He and Hermione began being friends nearly instantly after he got there. It was awkward at first, but rather quickly, they had become friends.

“I can’t just leave him,” Hermione said, looking down to conceal her blushing. She was open with Draco, but sometimes the things she said still embarrassed her slightly.

“I know,” Draco said in a slightly soothing voice. He personally believed that Ron was not good enough for the great person he had found Hermione to be. Not money-wise or even looks-wise. Ron just didn’t treat Hermione right; he didn’t trust her.

Hermione looked over at Draco who was still staring into nowhere. “I bet I bother you with all this stuff….” she said in a slightly ashamed voice.

Draco grinned at her, coming out of his trance. “No. It doesn’t bother me anymore; I’m pretty used to it,” he teased her.

She laughed and then everything fell silent. The two both stared up at the sky. Both were thinking along the same lines. Both were thinking that Hermione deserved more than what she had been getting lately. Both were thinking that Ron was being an insufferable git. Both were thinking that if something didn’t change soon, things were going to hit the fan.

They looked over at each other and somehow knew they had been thinking the same things. Draco wanted to give Hermione a reassuring smile, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. He just stared at her blankly.

“What’s wrong?” she asked him suddenly.

“I want to be reassuring to you, but I can’t. I don’t know how everything is going to turn out and I don’t want to lie and say it will all be okay,” he said honestly.

She stared at him for a second and then smiled. “I’m glad you don’t want to lie,” she said quietly. “Liars are the worst.”

The two talked for only a while longer before they decided to make their ways down to their common room. It was getting very late and, though the next day was Saturday, they were both anxious to get to bed.

Meanwhile, Ron was sitting up in his room, unable to sleep. He sighed and took out a piece of parchment and a quill. He began writing and didn’t stop for several minutes. When he finished, his knuckles were killing him, but he had succeeded in a lengthy letter in his messy scrawl. He attached the letter to Pig’s leg and sent it off.

“Goodnight, Draco,” Hermione said as she watched Draco walk into his room. She proceeded up the small flight of stairs to her dormitory and opened the door. At first she didn’t see anything, but then a minute owl came flying and nearly took her eye out.

“Pigwidgeon!” she said indignantly. She suddenly saw the letter attached to his leg and grabbed the owl, making its eyes bulge out of its head. She detached the letter and sent the tiny owl off into the night. She watched him for a few seconds before plopping down on her bed to read the letter.

Hermione stared at the parchment and instantly wished she’d have waited till the morning to read it. She sighed and got out a roll of parchment, a quill, and some ink. She began writing and did so for about an hour. By the time she’d finished, the parchment was filled up, and she was dead tired. She attached it to an owl that was always in the Heads’ common room and watched it fly off. She had been forced to finally come to a decision. She sighed, walked back up the stairs, and fell onto her bed. It took her a surprisingly short time to fall asleep, and when she did so, it was into a dreamless sleep.

I woke up with a bad feeling in my stomach from the start. I could see a school owl at the window, but I was reluctant to go get it. I honestly didn’t know if I wanted to know what the piece of parchment held inside of it. Nevertheless, I got up and got the parchment, asking the owl to wait there.

I looked briefly out the window and saw the makings of a beautiful Saturday morning. The dew was still sitting on the damp grass, and I could just see the Quidditch pitch. I heaved a deep sigh and returned to my bed, igniting my wand tip quietly so I wouldn’t wake anyone up. I began to read Hermione’s perfectly scrawled letter, admiring the length of it.

I found myself ashamed to discover my eyes swimming with tears. I folded the parchment up and put it carefully in my bedside table. I turned over in my bed and couldn’t fall back to sleep. I laid there for a long time; everyone else around me woke up and thought I was still asleep. They made their ways down to the common room, while I stayed upstairs, my head swimming with thoughts. It was really over, and that fact had just hit me.

*pops out*

Consults Ron. Poor Ron. I feel bad for him. But he shouldn't have gotten so jelouse. I wonder whats going to happen now. And Hermione is right. They ahve put alot of people in the middle.

Normal POV

Awkwardness filled the halls at Hogwarts for the following days. Hermione and Ron, though they were being civil with each other, couldn’t just go back to being friends that easily. Harry and Ginny felt especially caught in the middle. Draco was pleased that his friend had finally come to her senses. One evening, Draco and Hermione were on patrol duty together once again.

“How are you feeling?” Draco asked her, as he had every night since the two had finally broken up.

Hermione gave the same response, “I’ve been better.”

Draco stared at her and frowned. “Are you really that unhappy?” he asked her quietly.

Hermione nodded. “It’s really hard to explain. It’s been very bittersweet.”

Draco understood. “I get it—it’s just that Weasley was so mean to you all the time. I couldn’t take his crap for as long as you did!”

“I’m a strong woman,” Hermione laughed.

“Indeed you are,” Draco agreed. There was silence between the two for a while as they walked around some empty corridors.

Meanwhile, Harry and Ginny were sitting in the Gryffindor common room. Ron had gone to bed early which he had been doing since he and Hermione had broken up. Harry and Ginny sat hand in hand discussing the week’s events.

“I just can’t believe they actually broke up,” Ginny said in awe.

“I know,” Harry said, “It seemed like they never would, even with all the bickering they did.”

“It wasn’t just bickering anymore, though,” Ginny said honestly, “It had turned into Ron not trusting Hermione when she had given him no reason not to.”

“Yeah,” said Harry fairly, “But Hermione knew that Ron wouldn’t be cool with everything going on and all the time she had been spending with Draco and she didn’t care. She was more concerned with herself.”

“No,” Ginny said, becoming slightly annoyed, “Ron was being a jealous git. He admitted it himself!”

“Yeah, Ginny, but it takes two to tango!” Harry said loudly. The few students who were left in the common room turned their heads, but neither Harry or Ginny noticed.

“Hermione was honestly the victim here, Harry!” Ginny said, anger ringing in her every word.

Harry took a deep breath. “Why are we arguing about Ron and Hermione?” he asked, looking at his girlfriend.

She laughed, “I have no clue whatsoever.”

It was Saturday and Harry and Ginny were walking around the grounds together in the nice weather outside. Hermione was in the library studying and Ron was in the common room playing chess with Dean Thomas. Draco, meanwhile, was in his common room speaking with his father who had just blossomed out of the fireplace.

Stunned, Draco stood up and began welcoming his father. “Hello father. What brings you here today?”

His father smiled curtly, brushing off his robes. “Just coming to check on you since I didn’t see you for the rest of the summer…”

Draco did everything he could to hold back the gulp that was forming in his throat. “Oh—well why don’t you sit down father?” he asked politely as though he hadn’t heard the question that he had been so afraid of.

His father nodded and sat down, apparently calm. “Where have you been, Draco?”

A surge of bravery only belonging to a Gryffindor ran through Draco “I’ve been out,” he said icily.

“Out?” his father asked in disbelief, “Where on earth is ‘out’?”

“It means somewhere besides under your nose,” Draco said, his knees shaking slightly. He had no clue where all this bravery was coming from.

“You will not speak to me in this matter!” his father said, outraged.

“I will do whatever I please. I am of age now; I don’t have to listen to you or go along with what you say anymore.” Draco was angry; he had never had a say in his whole life, in his own life.

“This is not the way I raised you,” his father said calmly.

Draco nearly laughed, “No you just raised me to go along with some evil wizard who wants to kill everyone…that’s so much better. Now, I’d advise you to leave my common room now or I will call for the headmaster.” His father stared at him as though trying to figure him out. Finally he nodded curtly.

“I will not stay where my own son doesn’t want me.” He turned on his heel and grabbed some Floo powder. He took one last look at Draco and said, “The Dark Lord will hear about this, Draco.” He threw the powder into the fireplace and jumped in shouting, “Malfoy Manor!”

Draco stood where he was for quite some time. The Dark Lord will hear about this…. Would his own father really sell him out to the Dark Lord? He didn’t think so, but he had really made his father angry. Just as he was about to stick his head in the fireplace to speak with him, Hermione came walking through the doorway laden with books. She noticed right away that Draco was unusually pale.

“Draco, is something wrong?” she asked in a concerned voice. Draco took a deep breath, sat down, and began relating the entire story to Hermione. She gasped at the end, at Lucius’ last words.

“He wouldn’t really sell you out, would he?” Hermione asked, eyes wide.

“I honestly don’t know,” Draco said quietly, “I really made him mad.”

Hermione put a hand on his shoulder, “It was very brave, Draco.”

“What does brave have to do with this? If I get killed, brave won’t mean anything.”

Hermione winced at the thought of Draco being killed. “You won’t be killed,” she said suddenly.

He sighed, “Really? And you have come to this conclusion because….?”

She smiled slightly, “Because we’re going to speak with Dumbledore.”
