Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15, 1990 in Oxford, England which is still where she lives today when she’s not promoting Harry Potter around the world or filming the movies. When Emma was five her parents, Jacqueline and Chris Watson, both lawyers, divorced. Acting and performing was something natural to Emma and a talent she discovered at an early age. At the age of seven Emma won first prize in a school poetry recital: The Daisy Pratt Poetry Contest and starred in several school plays such as “Alice in Wonderland” and “Arthur: The Younger Years”. Then, when Emma was only nine years old, casting agents visited London to cast the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. Her drama teacher at the time recommended Emma to the agents and she tried out for what would “be a laugh”. Although after she got several call backs Emma become more serious about it until she was called into the producer’s office and told with Rupert Grint that both had been cast in the movie.
When Emma first started out filming the Philosopher’s Stone she was anxious to portray Hermione in a way that was faithful to the book, as she had been a fan of the books as well. Even though Emma was anxious she was excited as well- "I think the best thing which I was looking forward to seeing from the book was just the outlook from the whole of the school because it describes in the book coming over in a boat across the river to Hogwarts and just the first view - that took us ages, we had to keep going ahh, wow, ooh - a bit like watching fireworks going off, it was like ooh, eee, ahh, ooh."
Of course, the Philosopher’s Stone turned out be a success with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint portraying the trio fantastically. All three were signed on for Chamber of Secrets and the magic began again. Emma was faced with new challenges as a new movie loomed closer. She said she was most looking forward to being turned into a cat when the trio tries out some polyjuice potion to get into the Slytherin common room. Emma and the trio were also faced with the media again. "Going back to school is alright - I go to a very big school and some people give me a bit of stick. They walk past and go 'Wingardium Leviosa' for the billionth time that day, and I go aaagggghhhhhh! But apart from that most people are really nice about it. My close friends just treat me normally. They ask questions about it because they're curious but it's ok. It's funny mixing the two worlds, but I still do everything I used to do. I still play hockey and do all my sports."
Next in line was Prisoner of Azkaban. This film brought as many changes as the previous along with a change in director from Chris Columbus to Alfonso Cuaron. When the new director asked the trio to write essays on their characters, Emma went home and wrote an essay on Hermione that was about sixteen pages long, to the amusement of co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. Of course, along with the fact that Prisoner of Azkaban brought dementors to light and also Harry’s Godfather, it is also Emma favourite book.
Then came Goblet of Fire; where the books start to get darker as Voldemort makes his comeback. Emma’s character, Hermione, starts to discover herself more as she is invited to the Yule Ball by Quidditch superstar Viktor Krum. Emma remembers making Hermione’s entrance to the Yule Ball. “I never knew there were so many ways to walk down stairs.” She recalls, laughing. Goblet of Fire was released on November 18, 2005 and turned out to be a huge success as its previous movies before it.
What’s in store for Emma next? The fifth Potter book, Order of the Phoenix, is currently in production with Emma Watson and the rest of the gang back for another movie full of adventure, evil, and of course everyone’s favourite muggle-born genius, Hermione Granger portrayed by the lovely and talented Emma Watson.
