On February 21st 1946, Alan Rickman was born as the second son to Margaret Rose and Bernard Rickman. When he was younger he did well in calligraphy and watercolour painting, winning him a scholarship to Latymer Upper School in London, where he started getting involved in drama. Although he was very interested in drama and acting, he went on to attended Chelsea College of Art and Design and studied to become a graphic designer. Later he received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) which he attended between 1972–1974.
After he graduated from RADA, Rickman worked extensively in theatre, including working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In the 1980s he starred on television in BBC’s adaptation of Barchester Towers and moved his way into film.
Although he often plays the villain in film he has also played the lead roles in romantic films such as Sense and Sensibility and Truly, Madly, Deeply. Alan Rickman is known around the world for his marvellous versatile acting, but you probably know him best as the complicated Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.
Trivia:
~Was given the role of Professor Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) only after Tim Roth backed out.
~When he was a child, he had a speech disability: his lower jaw was very tight, causing his words to be indistinctive and muffled. It is this problem that gives him his very distinctive voice today.
~Failed his California driving test at one point for "driving too cautiously through a green light".
~Studied graphic design before becoming an actor.
~He is 11 years older than Timothy Spall, 12 years older than Adrian Rawlins and Gary Oldman, 17 years older than David Thewlis, and 21 years older than Geraldine Somerville. Nevertheless, the characters that the six of them play in the Harry Potter films are meant to be contemporaries and former classmates.
