Shirley was born into a working-class Scottish family, the oldest of 3 girls. She began singing locally as a teenager, and eventually entered a talent contest, which she won. The Guildhall School of Music and Drama was the next destination, leading to a performance for England's National Theatre Company. The exposure enabled her to land a role on a TV drama, and in further projects. She has won and been nominated for several awards, mostly in various film festivals. At 35 years of age, Shirley is the oldest person to have played a Hogwarts school student – Moaning Myrtle.
