Rupert is the first son born to Nigel and Jo Grint. His father Nigel Grint sells Formula One (racing) memorabilia, while his mother Jo is a house-wife. Rupert attented Richard Hale Secondary School in Hertfordshire, which was an all-boys school. While in school he took avid interest in school plays and drama activities. As a child, he was once cast as a fish in a play based on the story of Noah's ark. He had only appeared in plays for school and his local theatre group such as Peter Pan, Belly Dance Costumes and Rumplestiltskin before he landed up with the role of Ronald Weasley.
"I am the biggest "Harry Potter" fan; I even was before I knew there was going to be a film. I read all the books. "
Rupert was already a big Harry Potter fan, often co-relating himself to Ronald Weasley.
"When I read the books, I imagined that the family of Ron Weasley was my family. After reading the books, I knew the Weasleys inside out."
It was on Newsround that he first came to know about the auditions for the Harry Potter films. He did his own video, his mum filming him pretending to be his drama teacher who was a girl, and therefore required him to look like a girl and hence adonning a skirt. He then wrote a rap about how much he wanted to be Ron in the film, and sent it off along with a picture of himself. A couple of auditions followed, which comprised of learning the lines of their character, and a screen test. He was with Emma Watson, when they were taken into the Director Chris Columbus's office who told them that they were going to be in the film.
This was just the beginning for Rupert, as he starred in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) which became a big hit, followed by a completely different role as a madcap professor in Thunderpants (2002). In 2002, 2004 and 2005, he again starred as Ron Weasley in the Potter sequels Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In between shooting the Potter blockbusters, Rupert starred opposite his Potter mum Julie Walters in the more low-key British comedy/drama Driving Lessons. In a very different role, Rupert played an awkward teenager with a ferociously religious and over protective mother(Laura Linney), who lands a job as an assistant to an eccentric actress, fostering a relationship that results in both growing up in the process. The latest in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix hits the cinemas July 13th 2007.

Rupertable Quotes:
Rupert said, “I don’t really take things seriously. Ron is a funny character and that is why I like playing him."
"When I read the books, I imagined that the family of Ron Weasley was my family. After reading the books, I knew the Weasleys inside out."
When asked what character he found the scariest in the Harry Potter series Rupert joked, "Hermione. Just kidding! Voldemort."
"Being famous is wicked, but it's better to be normal."
"It's really weird to get recognized and people call you 'Ron.'"
"Things at home didn't change much. I still have to clean my own room!"
"Too bad brooms can't really fly. Now if you miss the bus you can't just go in your room and fly to school with a nimbus two thousand!"
"My nan's half Irish but I don't think I've got Scottish blood, although I do look like a Scot."
On the Harry Potter action figures, "Oh, they're scary. To think that people are going to be playing with you!"
Rupert makes his fan-girls happy by saying, "I would date a fan, I don't have a problem with that. I look for a good sense of humour in a girlfriend."
When asked what makes him act scared in the movies Rupert said: "I think of something scary, like maybe a teacher I had. Although then I might get too scared!"
Rupert tells how he got his name: "Actually, my name was the one that my parents pulled out of the hat. Really. There were other names they put in this hat, and they pulled out 'Rupert' first."
Rupert's views on romance:
Rupert said: “It’s weird doing romance. I’ve never been attracted to playing a romantic lead.”
"I don't know - I'm not really looking forward to doing that! But yeah... I hope it doesn't happen. I hope Ron gets killed off before they actually do something", was what Rupert had to say when asked if something's going on between Ron and Hermione after the awkward hug- stop - and then only the handshake scene in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
When asked if he really hoped that there won’t be any love relationships between Ron and Hermione, Rupert answered: "Yes, I really, really hope there won’t be. But it seems Ron does feel something. But luckily they haven’t kissed or anything like that."
And when asked if it was because he didn’t like Hermione or Emma?
Rupert replied: No, nothing like that. It’s Ron who doesn’t like Hermione, or so he wishes. I don’t have a problem with Hermione, nor with Emma, she’s a great girl.
But lately Rupert has lost the typical teenager disgust he had before and when asked about Ron's romance, he said, "That's in the sixth one, I think. There has always been a thing between Ron and Hermione, which has been played with subtlety. So we'll have to wait until the seventh one to see if that comes into anything."
Comparing the kiss in Driving Lessons to the big snog in Half-Blood Prince where Ron kisses Lavender Brown to get back at Hermione, Rupert said, "Ben's kiss is very nervous and I think Ron's is a bit more enthusiastic."
"And how does Emma feel about this?", Rupert was questioned.
"I don't know ... she's probably looking forward to it very much! ", came the reply.
" It would be quite weird, actually. I'm not sure I'd be looking forward to it. Emma Watson's like a little sister to me. We've known each other for six years! It would feel kind of strange".
About the kiss in Driving Lessons:"It was very weird and very different."
Rupert on his fellow HP co-stars:
When asked to describe Dan in one word, Rupert said, "Hyperactive."
About Alan Rickman," He's wicked, he is. Really nice guy. Just his voice and he's like huge. He was a bit scary at first but he's a really nice guy."
On Kenneth Brannagh (Lockhart)," I thought he was really funny and really easy to talk to."
"It would be weird without her, and it would be a sort of shame if she doesn't stick it out. It's not up to me because they do take up so much of your life. I don't know what she thinks, but I do hope that she doesn't leave", when asked if Emma might leave the series before its over.
