Richard started his acting career firmly on the classical stage, taking part in numerous productions. He was best known though for his portrayal of Shakespeare’s works. Also branching into radio, film and comedy, he was able to show his talents for accents to both serious and comedic affect. Richard is known by Potter fans for his spot-on portrayal of Harry’s very muggle uncle, Vernon Dursley.
Random Facts:
- Both of Richard’s parents were deaf, so he learnt sign language at an early age.
- In 2004 he won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Hector in The History Boys at the National Theatre (London).
- He was awarded the 2006 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as "Hector" in Alan Bennett's "The History Boys."
- He has had performances interrupted by mobile phones, asking offenders to leave the theatre.
