Jim Broadbent was born on May 24, 1949 in Lincolnshire. He is the youngest son of furniture maker Roy Broadbent and sculptress Dee Broadbent. He attended a Quaker boarding school in Reading before getting into an art school. Knowing he wanted to act, he later transferred to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). After graduation in 1972 he moved into his professional career on stage, performing with the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and as part of the National Theatre of Brent.

He also worked steadily in televison with directors such as Mike Newell and Stephen Frears. He made his film debut in Jerzy Skolimowski's The Shout in 1978. In 2001 he was in multiple Oscar-nominated film Moulin Rouge! for which he won a Best Supporting Actor BAFTA award for his excellent performance as Harold Zidler. He won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars in 2001’s Iris.

Jim Broadbent is know all over the world as a marvelous character actor, but you probably know him best as Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter films.
