Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Below are chapter summaries of the book.

Chapter 1 - The Other Minister

The Prime Minister sits in his office after a long week that included a collapsing bridge, a hurricane and two freak murders when Mr. Fudge the Minister of Magic (or 'The Other Minister' as the Prime Minister calls him) comes. We learn that Mr. Fudge has visited the Prime Minister a few times before to keep him updated about the ongoings in the wizarding world. This time he comes to tell him that You-Know-Who is back, the bridge collapse was the work of wizards, the hurricane most probably giants on rampage (for the Death Eaters), the two murders were witches, (Emmeline Vance of the Order and Susan Bones of the Ministry), the uncharacteristic mist that is in all of England is the result of Dementors breeding and last, but not least, that Fudge has been replaced by a certain Rufus Scrimgeour. The new minister arrives and informs the Prime Minister that his new secretary in the outer office is a well trained Auror and that one of his Junior Ministers is under the Imperius Curse, being treated at the very moment.

Chapter 2 - Spinner's End

A desperate Narcissa Malfoy seeks Snape in Spinner's End to tell him of Voldemort's plan and ask for his help. Wormtail is also there as his servant. Narcissa is pursued by her sister Bellatrix Lestrange, who tries to prevent her from doing so. Bellatrix does not trust and because of this Snape chooses to tell here why the Dark Lord trusts him. He says he was placed at Hogwarts by the Dark Lord and never left during the time he thought his master to be dead. He did not return immediately when he felt the mark on his arm burn, which proved very helpful for Dumbledore still trusts Snape. When Snape tells Narcissa that he knows of the Dark Lord's plan for her son, she begs him to try and help. Snape says that he will and to be ceirtain he fulfils this, Snape and Narcissa form an Unbreakable Vow with Bellatrix as the Bonder.

Chapter 3 - Will and Won't

Harry has only been with the Dursley's for a fortnight, but already Dumbledore wants to remove Harry from their house for the summer. He arrives late in the night and tells Harry that he will be going to the Burrow. Dumbledore has something else to discuss with Harry: Sirius Black gave everything he owned to Harry, including the headquarters to the Order of the Phoenix. The only problem is that they are not entirely sure that the house has not been placed under spells that prevents Harry from taking it, seeing as he is neither a Black nor a Pure-Blood. Dumbledore therefore summons Kreacher and ask Harry to give him an order. Luckily Kreacher has to obey and Harry has proved that he is the rightful owner of the house.

Chapter 4 - Horace Slughorn

Dumbledore brings Harry to a little town and takes him to a house. Inside everything is shattered, but Dumbledore is not fooled. He finds the inhabitant and cleans up the mess. The person they meet is Horace Slughorn, former Head of Slytherin house and now Dumbledore has come there to persuade him to come back and teach at Hogwarts. He is at first unwilling, but as Dumbledore hoped, Harry changed his mind. After this visit Dumbledore brings Harry to the Burrow, but before he is allowed to enter, Dumbledore tells him the following: Harry ought to tell his friends about the Prophecy, he is to have his Invisibility Cloak with him at all times, even at Hogwarts, Dumbledore will give him private lessons and that while Harry is with the Weasley he should not risk his neck. Harry asks what happened to Dumbledore withered and blackened hand, but gets no answer.

Chapter 5 - And Excess of Phlegm

Tonks is with Mrs. Weasley when Harry comes, but soon she leaves. Mrs. Weasley tells Harry that Mr. Weasley have been promoted and Mr. Weasley, who's been working late gets back from work. When Harry wakes the next morning he finds out that Fleur Delacour is visiting the Burrow and that she is now Bill Weasley's fiancé, much to the displeasure of Mrs.Weasley, Ginny and Hermione. Constantly there is intelligence of more people missing (among them Fortescue and Ollivander) and that there's been murders.

The trio's OWL results arrives, but Harry is disappointed because he did not get an O in potions and will not be able to become an Auror. Harry also learns that he has been made Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team.

Chapter 6 – Draco's Detour

Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ginny have to pick up their school supplies in Diagon Alley and when they reaches the street there is a noticeable difference. On the windows there are Ministry posters and people are walking in huddles. Hagrid, who is there to guard Harry, follows the trio to Madam Malkin's where they run into Draco Malfoy and his mother. Malfoy is being nasty and refuses to let Madam Malkin do her work properly. There is a confrontation between Malfoy and the trio and the former leaves with his mother without buying the robes.

Afterwards they go to visit the highly successful Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. During their time there, Harry sees Malfoy walk past the window and without hesitating he throws the Invisibility Cloak over himself, Ron and Hermione. They follow Malfoy to Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley where he is demanding that a worried Borgin will fix something, although they do not manage to catch what. Hermione tries to investigate, but is far too see through.

Chapter 7 - The Slug Club

Harry is convinced that Malfoy is a Death Eater, but neither Ron nor Hermione deem this likely. Harry tries to speak to Mr. Weasley about it before the Hogwarts Express leaves, but also he dismisses it. On the train Harry gets more attention than usual and hess even invited by a group of girls to sit with them, though he decline.

Professor Slughorn invites certain students to eat lunch with him. Among them are Harry, Neville, Ginny and Blaise Zabini of Slytherin. The professor wishes to single out students that might do well later in life or those who already have good connections, so that he may boast of good connections too. After the lunch Harry gets an idea and pulls on his Invisibility Cloak and follows Blaise into the compartment he shares with Malfoy, among others. Malfoy alludes to that Voldemort might use him for something. Malfoy notices Harry and after the others have left, he stuns Harry, breaks his nose and leaves him on the train to be brought back to London, invisible.

Chapter 8 – Snape Victorius

A peaky Tonks, who is one of the Aurors guarding the castle, finds Harry and takes him to the gates where she means for Hagrid to pick him up. Unfortunately for Harry it is Snape who comes and taunts him while taking him up the the castle. During the feast we find out that Professor Slughorn will not teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, but potions and that this means that Snape is given the position he has wanted for so long.

Chapter 9 – The Half-Blood Prince

As Snape is no longer teaching potions, Harry can start all the subjects he needs to become and Auror. In the first potions lesson Professor Slughorn sets a competition and whoever manages to create the best potion wins a bottle of Felix Felicius, a potion of pure luck. As Harry and Ron have not bought any supplies, they are given books and the former's has writings in it. Harry follows these instructions and find that they are most helpful and wins. When Ginny overhears him telling Ron and Hermione, she gets furious and checks the book with a spell. Nothing happens, but when the book falls to the floor and opens this inscription is revealed: 'This Book is the Property of the Half-Blood Prince'.

Chapter 10 – The House of Gaunt

Harry gets his first lesson with Dumbledore and there he is to visit a memory of Bob Odgen's. Harry and Dumbledore follow Odgen to a small cottage in Little Hangleton where he is to inform Morfin Gaunt of a hearing. The Gaunts are the decentants of Salazar Slytherin, now poor and despise Muggles. Mr. Gaunt refuses to acknowledge his son's breach as a crime. There is also a girl in the house and when a Muggle rides by and Morfin tells that Merope is in love with him, his father's temper rises even more. Furious he causes havoc. He and his son are sent to Azkaban for their different offenses. Outside the Pensieve Dubledore confirms that Mr. Gaunt's daughter is Voldemort's mother and says that he suspects her of using magic to lure Tom Riddle to marry her.

Chapter 11 – Hermione's Helping Hand

Harry holds Gryffindor tryouts and a large number of people turn up, even people from other houses. Harry manages to select a new team, with Ron on; Hermione Confuonded his competition, McLaggen, who had a horrible temper anyway. Afterwards Harry, Ron and Hermione go to see Hagrid, who has been refusing to see them because they are not taking Care of Magical Creatures. In addtion to this, Hagrid is upset because Aragog is ill. They manage to soften Hagrid up and they are all friends once more.

Chapter 12 – Silver and Opals

Harry is trying spells that the Half-Blood Prince has written, much to the displeasure of Hermione. He receives Dumbledore's note about his next lesson and luckily it is at the same time as one of Slughorn’s dinners, which Harry is keen on avoiding. There is a Hogsmeade weekend and the trio wants to go. Harry asks if Ginny wants do go, but she declines the invitation. In the town Harry sees Mundungus selling things he has stolen from Sirius, or Harry rather, and he gets violent. On their trip back to the school they follow Katie Bell and a friend who are arguing. Katie has been given a package in the Three Broomsticks that she is to give to someone. She drops it and floats screaming up into the air. Harry run for Hagrid who takes her to the Hospital Wing. The rest set off to the castle with the package where McGonnagal meets them and demands that they tell her what happened. Harry reckons that it was Malfoy's doing, but McGonnagal says that he was never in Hogsmeade and no one but Harry thinks it has to do with Malfoy.

Chapter 13 – The Secret Riddle

Harry has his second lesson with Dumbledore and this time it is one of Dubledore's own memories. The memory is of when he first meets Riddle in the orphanage to tell him that he is accepted to Hogwarts. At this point in Voldemort's life he has already learnt to control his powers to some extent, but he uses them to inflict pain. He has for instance killed a boy's rabbit and taken two children into a cave and scared them out of their wits. He easily accept that he is a wizard and he hates the name 'Tom'- because it is so common – for he wishes to be unique. He was then as friendless and secretive as he still is.

Chapter 14 – Felix Felicis

Slughorn is to hold a Christmas party for its members, something that makes Ron mad, but things change when Hermione tells him that she was going to ask him. This pleases Ron, but because of the prospect of the Quidditch match, discovering Ginny kissing and having her tell him that he is pathetic, he treats Hermione icily. Meanwhile Harry is trying to convince himself that his feeling of intense jealousy towards Dean when seeing him kissing Ginny, is only brotherly.

The day of the match arrives and Harry gives Ron the Felix Felicis potion, or so they think: For Harry makes sure Hermione sees it and alludes to it. Because Ron believes he is lucky the Gryffindor team's performance is excellent. At the party afterwards Harry sees Ron glued to Lavender Brown, something Hermione obviously also notices; she leaves the common room. Harry follows her and not long after Ron and Lavender comes. Ron thinks he is lucky for nothing serious happening, but when Hermione's at the door she makes the birds that were flying around her head attack him.

Chapter 15 – The Unbreakable Vow

Ron continues to be with Lavender and Hermione is miserable, she sinks so low that she chooses to go to the party with McLaggen. Harry, who still is admired among the girls and that tries to give him love potion, asks Luna to come with him, as friends. During the party Filch shows up with Malfoy, who has been lurking in the corridors. Snape who is attending takes Malfoy with him to speak and Harry follows in his Invisibility Cloak. He overhears Snape trying to offer Malfoy help, but Malfoy wants none. Harry doesn't learn what Malfoy's up to, but he hears about the Unbreakable Vow.

Chapter 16 – A Very Frosty Christmas

Harry is at the Burrow for Christmas and he speaks with Lupin and Mr. Weasley about what he overheard. Lupin says he trusts Snape and so should Harry. Lupin also tells Harry that he is trying to persuade werewolves not to turn to the dark side. Greyback is the werewolf closest connected with Voldemort and he wants to attack children, take them away from their parents so they may teach them to hate normal wizards and witches, to be able to take over the world.

The next day Percy comes with the Minister of Magic under the pretense of being in the vicinity and that Percy wants to speak with his parents. Their real reason is for the Minister to speak with Harry. He wants to have Harry help the ministry, or pretend to. His bait is Harry's wish to become an Auror. However, Harry is not so easily fooled and he shows the Minister the hand with the scar which says: 'I must not tell lies.' They part in an icy manner.

Chapter 17 – A Sluggish Memory

Harry has his third lesson with Dumbledore and Harry tells him of Snape and his meeting with Scrimgeour. Dumbledore is not worried by what Harry tells him and is touched by Harry being his boy through and through. Tonight they visit 2 memories. The first one is from Morfin Gaunt where Tom comes to visit him and tells him that he looks like the Muggle in 'the big, fine house.' The next thing he knows is that he wakes up. Dumbledore tells Harry that Gaunt claimed he had killed the Riddles and was sent to Azkaban. Before he died Dumbledore obtained the memory.

The second memory belongs to Slughorn, but it has been tampered with. Dumbledore thinks the information that is 'fogged out' is of high importance and he tells Harry it is his homework to make Slughorn tell him.

Chapter 18 – Birthday Surprises

Apparation lessons start, but hardly anything happens, except for a few who splinch themselves. However, in their first lesson Harry overhears Malfoy speaking to Crabbe and Goyle about guarding, therefore Harry starts checking the Maurader's Map for Malfoy, but for some ominous reason he cannot locate him.

March comes along and Ron turns 17. Ron gets, among other things, Chocloate Cauldrons and he eats one. Ron gets weird and says that he thinks he loves Romilda Vane. After a moment Harry realise that the Chocolate Cauldrons were his, given to him by the girl in question. He takes Ron down to Slughorn who creates and antidote. Because it's Ron's birthday they drink mulled mead and in Ron's it is poison. Only Harry's quick response and finding a bezoar saves him.

Chapter 19 – Elf Tails

Ron won't be able to play in the next match and Harry says it's ok that McLaggen can play, however, he is forced to put up with McLaggen acting as though he is the Captain. Lavender is also bothering Harry, talking about Ron, who pretends to be sleeping every time she comes to call. The Quidditch Match goes horribly because McLaggen is telling people what to do and distracts everyone on the team. During one of these distractions, Harry takes a Bludger to the head and wakes up in the Hospital Wing. Gryffindor lost 60 to 320. Late in the night he has a sudden idea and summons Kreatcher, who Harry finds, is fighting with Dobby. Harry asks Kreatcher to tail Malfoy and report everything he does. Dobby is eager to please Harry and asks if he can help.

Chapter 20 – Voldemort's Request

Ron and Hermione are on speaking terms again, but or because rahter, things are not looking to great for Lavender.

Harry has another lesson with Dumbledore and Dumbledore is disappointed that Harry has not been able to retiereve the information he was supposed to. Harry is shown two new memories, one in which Voldemort visits an old lady as an assistant in Borgin and Burkes. Ms. Smith shows him a cup that belonged to Helga Hufflepuff and a locket of Salasar Slytherin, the latter was sold by Merope Riddle. Two days later Ms. Smith is found dead, and her house-elf says she committed the murder, curiously, the two possessions she showed Voldemort are gone. It is fair to presume that Voldemort used the same technique here as with his uncle.

The second memory is one of Dumbledore's. At this point Voldemort is no longer the handsome boy he used to be, but not quite as changed as he is in the present. He has come to Hogwarts to asks for the Defense Against the Dark Arts post, but Dumbledore refuses. He wonders why Voldemort wanted to teach, but he never gets a clear answer. Voldemort does get some revenge, or we're led to believe so, for from that point on no teacher has managed to hold that post more than one year.

Chapter 21 – The Unknownable Room

Kreacher and Dobby tell Harry that Malfoy often walk up to the 7th floor where the Room of Requirement is with different people. However, they realise, it is actually Crabbe or Goyle in various disguises made by Polyjuice Potion. Harry tries to get into the room, but finds he can't. Meanwhile, Hermione says that he should try to persuade Hornslug, albeit Harry is trying. It's hard to get anywhere when Hornslug avoids him.

There is a lot going on between the characters: Ron and Hermione are working on their preparation for their apparation test; Ron has not yet picked up the courage to break up with Lavender; While with Harry they enter a bathroom and find Moaning Myrtle going on about a boy that visits and talks to her.

Chapter 22 – After the Burial

Harry, Ron and Hermione get a note from Hagrid telling them that Aragog is dead and that he wishes they would come to the burial. Since it takes place at twilight they cannot come. While talking about the Apparation test that Hermione and Ron will take very soon Harry wishes them luck and Ron gets an idea; Harry should use the Felix Felicis potion to get the memory from Hornslug. Harry says that he will do it if he cannot get anywhere after the day's lesson. Harry has to take the potion and finds that he should go to Hagrid. Harry strolls by the Greenhouses where he meets Hornslug with Sprout and persuades him to come to the burial. Afterwards Harry, Hagrid and Hornslug goes into Hagrid's cabin and the two latter proceeds to get drunk. When Hagrid is asleep Harry gets the memory from Hornslug.

Chapter 23 – Horcruxes

Chapter 23 – Horcruxes
Harry feels the effect of the potion leave him and when he comes to the portrait he's told that there's a new password and that if he's got a problem, he should go to the Headmaster. And Harry does. Dumbledore gets excited when Harry tells him the news and together they enter the memory. What Slughorn wanted to conceal was that he had indeed talked to Voldemort about Horcruxes. Horcruxes are objects that you store a piece of your soul in. He explained that to do such a thing, you have to kill, for it tears your soul apart and that part can be encased in an object. Harry and Dumbledore return to the present and the latter gives a couple of explanations: Because 7 is a magical number, which Voldemort pointed out in the memory, Dumbledore suspects that two of the horcruxes are already ruined, The Diary and Marvolo's ring. As for the other horcruxes Dumbledore suspects that they are Voldemort's present body, Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, Salazar Slytherin's locket, Nagini and possibly something of Ravenclaw's or Gryffindor's. To destroy Voldemort you need to destroy all the horcruxes and locating these things is what Dumbledore has been doing while he's away from school.

Dumbledore wants Harry to help him in the search and Dumbledore is intent on getting Harry to understand that he is relying too much of the prophecy, because if Voldemort had not heard anything off it none of it would have come true. About the part that Harry has powers that the Dark Lord knows not, he still say it's love and make Harry see that this is so important for it is what has kept him from being seduced by the Dark Arts. Despite all he's been through, he remains pure at heart. Lastly that 'neither can live while the other survives' means that Voldemort's hearing the first part made him eager to kill Harry and that even if Harry hadn't heard the prophecy, he'd still have tried to kill Voldemort.

Chapter 24 – Sectumsempra

Harry tells Hermione and Ron about what he learnt from Dumbledore, and they tell him that Ron is now free of Lavender and that Ginny is no longer seeing Dean. The upcoming match is also on Harry's mind.

Amidst all this, Harry discovers Malfoy's name in the boy's bathroom and when he hurries to investigate he finds Malfoy confiding in Moaning Myrtle and crying. When Malfoy sees Harry, he tries to use the Cruciatus Curse, but Harry, without thinking, casts the 'Sectumsempra' spell, whose effect is unknown to him. To his horror he realise that the spell creates large slashes across Malfoy's chest. Myrtle floats of screaming and within seconds Snape appears and heals Malfoy's wounds. Snape is very furious with Harry and tells him to bring his school books. Harry follows orders, but hides the Prince's book in the Room of Requirement and brings Ron's as his. Snape doesn't believe Harry, and suspiciously utters no word of expulsion and gives Harry detention every Saturday until the year ends.

Because of detention, Harry misses the match. Luckily they win and Ginny rushes up and hugs him, whereupon he kisses her without thinking.
