Why is Michael Barry so secretive about his past?

What no-one knows is that he is dead.

Well, not really. Him and his girlfriend were eighteen, she was from England, he was Irish. They lived a small and remote village in West of Ireland called Sallaskey, and he wasn't the only one with secrets...

They walked along the strand, the thin roll of sand that wove it's way around the rocks, hands joined together gingerly, every example of their adolescence springing off them. Michael knew he had to tell her, but he also knew it would change everything.

He thought he was the only one with a secret in Sallaskey.

He was wrong.

Michael walked down the strand with Erin, his girlfriend, until they came to their special place, the roll of sand that went through the jagged rocks, and looped back to the shore. His hand held hers gently, and he closed his eyes. It was sunny, (in Ireland it rarely is) , but the grey sky breathed a light mist, surrounding Sallaskay with an eerie wall.

Sallaskay didn't need a wall to keep itself cut off from everywhere else, there was no other towns or villages for at least thirty nine miles. But the people of Sallaskay had everything they needed, with all the things necessary to survival.

Michael looked at Erin. He was eighteen, but over the past few months, (including the ones he had been boyfriend to Erin), he had aged not physically but mentally. Well, you'd need to, if you wanted to keep the inconvenient secret of your own brutal death.

Eh. As much as Erin liked pretty atmosphere, she hated mist and she hated wind, and if there was one thing she was sure of, it was that Ireland had a lot of mist and wind, particulary in Sallaskay, but admitedly, she enjoyed it more with Michael, he always saw the beauty in the cold, something which she struggled with. Holding his hand, she watched him warily as he closed his eyes.

And then he stopped walking. The blonde looked at him with a raised eyebrow, why did we stop? She asked, looking around the area to see if there was anyone

Michael opened his green-grey eyes in surprise, having forgotten where he was. "Sorry," he said, "just, er, fell asleep a bit..." He mumbled, half laughing at himself. He turned to Erin, a small grin spreading across his face. He looked at her, then at the sea, then back at her again. He spontaneously kicked off his boots and socks, and ran straight on, in to the sea, laughing as the cold waves washed over him. "Fancy coming in?" He called, still laughing at the randomness of it.

You fell asleep standing up? Erin said doubtfully, the corners of her lips turning up in a laugh, you're not normal Michael she grinned, and then he broke the hands, which you know, she was fine with, but it had been nice holding hands with someone who had warm hands, instead now, she was just standing, shivering away in jeans and a top. Not swimming weather. More, sitting at home, watching televison and reading books. Running about in the water? Nooo.

And yet it was so tempting. She shrugged, checking what colour her blouse was and how see through it could go, but a) it was black and b) she had a vest underneath. Okay then, she grinned, running into the water, gasping at the coldness that hit her like needles. OHMYGOD. So. Cold she shivered, standing still and shaking

Michael kept laughing, but it became quieter, as he watched Erin become drenched. He loved her so much, but he was only eighteen, he didn't really have that muche experience. When at Hogwarts, he did manage a couple of girlfriends (no, not at the same time) but Erin was the first girl he really liked. After another few minutes of weirdness and wetness, it started raining, heavily. "Let's head back," he said, frowning at the raindrops as they fell in to his eyes. He was looking forward to changing in to warm clothes and sitting by the fire, maybe watch some telly or read. Whatever, really. Grinning, he waded through the water and on to the shore.

Erin stood, shivering in the sea, feeling thoroughly cold and crap and began to run her hands through her hair which was already begining to dry out. She need a hairdryer and a hair brush pretty urgently so her hair wouldn't go too huge. And then it began to rain. Bloody brilliant. Yeah, lets she said, as she began to follow him, shaking herself and trying to hide from the rain. Bloody Sallaskey, it always rained there

Sensing Erin's stress, he ran faster until he came up to their house. It was on the street, there were only two, facing each other, glaring under the rain. He punched the key in to the door, and kicked it open, and held it open for Erin.

He grinned still, shaking his head as his dark blonde hair began to flop over his bottle green eyes, which were vivid with cold and excitement. He went over and lit the stove, and felt warm within moments. He then went in to his room and changed in to jeans and a green jumper and black Converse. His hair dried naturally but his face was still a little damp. Drying it with his sleeve, he waited for Erin.
