The steamer was definitely slowing down now. The place which only they had occupied formerly had slowly been filling up and, looking around, Sirius realized that they were surrounded a throng of people. The little cabin seemed to have emptied, the turbulent waters in the vicinity had calmed down to pacification, and Paris, the capital city of France, was fast approaching.

It was light now. What they call “shining bright.” The day was not a sunny one – clouded would have been the exact word – but, for now, sunlight was dispersing across the stretch of azure around them and the colourful harbour, too, was submerged in light, getting bigger and bigger with every passing second. Sirius glanced at Pascal, who still had her cloak wrapped tight around herself, and ran a hand through his half dried hair.

She was too beautiful. He realized it now, looking at her again. Those eyes, that hair. Something was wrong here. She was just another pretty girl – Not someone whose hair fanned out like a Veela without so much as a gust of air, or who had eyes within which wisps of silver unfurled. But she was still too beautiful. He wondered why people said nothing was perfect – here was something perfect. It just didn’t fit in...

Minutes slowly trickled by and, at long last, the steamer came to a halt. There was, all at once, a rise in the noise level as passengers began to pick up their briefcases and suitcases and everything else they could possibly have brought along, and rushed to touch land. Pascal did not move.

“Well, we should be going,” Sirius said, getting up.

She still did not move.

“Pascal?”

She looked up, not meeting his gaze. “Yes?”

“Shouldn’t we be getting off?”

She shifted in her seat. “You get down, I’ll come,” she said quietly. Her voice was suddenly small. He was sure he heard the unease in it, sure he saw a flicker of discomfort in her eyes. There was something she was not telling him - or did not want to tell.

“Um, do you really hate me that much for waking you up earlier?” he asked, trying to joke away the feeling of uneasiness in the air.

There was no laughter.

Oooooooh, awkward *coughcough*

No laughter. Pascal forced a strained sort of smile. “Go on, no one’s going to eat my alive if I stay behind for a while,” she said in a forceful voice. But Sirius had never been one to give up so easily. He stooped down and picked up her crimson suitcase. “Come on, Pascal. We can get a carriage – I mean train – from here, no?”

She finally gave in. “Okay.” Her voice was lost again, a lost child’s voice. She smiled at him, the sort of smile you smile before stepping in the battlefield, or plunging headfirst into a gushing river, one that ends in some steep waterfall. Then she got up, one hand clutching her side.

Sirius had no idea why she had hesitated so much before saying yes. He walked towards the steamer’s exit, looking around for a second before turning to see if Pascal was coming or not.

And then his heart skipped a beat.

She was coming, alright, but not the way he expected. They said nothing was perfect, and it seemed they were right after all. Somewhere, there had been a mistake, a grave, grave mistake – it was like a thorn that wouldn’t go away, clinging to the most beautiful rose of the garden. Nothing mattered now. He knew why she had not wanted to get up; not wnted to accompany him.

Her face was colouring because of the effort. One hand still clutching her side, pain evident in her eyes, she was not walking towards him – She was trying to.

Struggling, tripping Pascal! She was lame.

Sirius, where are your manners? The poor girls dying there, trying to walk to your handsome face, and all you can do is GAPE?!
