“Get outta mah way –”

Apparently, returning to the tiny, over-crowded cabin was not such a good idea. Sirius stepped hastily aside as a man nearly rammed him into the wall in the process of settling back on top of a stingy mattress spread on to a little part of the broken-tiled floor, a glass in his hand.

“Champagne?”

He spun around, finding himself face to face with a grubby man who immediately reminded him of Wormtail, though the likeness was less than perfect. The rather hunchbacked person held up an empty glass, along with a jug full of what did not even remotely look like champagne. Seawater, more like.

“No, thank you,” he said, annoyed, quickly moving away from the place. The next second, he was standing by the counter.

“Ye wan’ sumfin ‘gain?” The bald man there asked. Sirius shook his head. “Then move, there's others who do.”

Even though it quite a task to understand what the man was saying, Sirius understood the displeased expression on his face to mean that he did not want Sirius crowding the already over-crowded place if he did not want anything. So much for his plans for better company. The girl outside had at least known how to speak English…

Five minutes later, he was outside again, letting the waves splatter his hair each time the steamer nearly overturned.

Another minute, and he was seated by the sleeping girl again. “Are you awake?”

No response.

“Are you awake?” He was louder this time.

The girl’s eyes flew open. “Go away,” she mumbled sleepily, before turning over and falling asleep again.

“Are you going to France?” he asked out loud.

The girl finally gave in. Opening her eyes, she began to rub them groggily with both of tiny fists like a child. Then she sat up with some difficulty, her hair all tangled up in her hood, smoothed the creases out of her cloak, and dug into the handbag she had kept safe inside of it. A minute later, she was lighting a cigarette.

“Of course I’m going to France. Does this steamer go anywhere else?” she said, clearly annoyed at having been awoken as she held the lit cigarette between the index and middle fingers of her left hand.

“You smoke,” was all Sirius could say in response. She answered with a withering look, a look that clearly said, “So what?” But Sirius could not help being confused. She could sound so innocent – it was impossible to think she could act its reverse so easily.

“So you’re going to France?” she asked him after a moment of silence.

“Of course I’m going to France. Does this steamer –” he threw her own sentences back at her, leaving the last unfinished. The girl laughed. Laughter like Sirius had never had before – soft, ringing laughter.

“You’re clever,” she said, looking at him through large, happy eyes. “I live on Grafton Street,” she added without any invitation. “Why are you here?”

“To go to France,” Sirius replied laughingly. “Why else? Why are you here?”

She threw her cigarette on to the wet floor, where it went out. “Because daddy wants me to go to Paris.”

*hugs post* Mmm, the girl sounds like fun. She's spunky, wild, and has a unique flare!

Is her daddy a mob guy or something? LOL. Or at least someone important to the story?

Sirius raised an eyebrow. “Your father?” he repeated, wondering what on earth he wanted to send his daughter off to Paris to.

The girl nodded, now looking at him through widened, glassy eyes. “Yes, daddy,” she said fondly. “My great-aunt lives there. Daddy has always thought constant residence in London will bore anyone in the end, so he sends me to Paris every year. He’s very fond of it because mum …” she fell quiet, all of a sudden.

“Because mum?” Sirius asked curiously.

The girl looked up at him, her hands clasped in her lap. Then she looked down. “Because mum … died in Paris,” she said, her voice that of a child who has just misplaced its favourite teddy bear and can not find it again.

“I’m sorry.” Those were the only words Sirius could come up with. He felt like an insensitive git now, having pressed her for information that he knew she was hesitating to disclose. He suddenly realized how difficult it was to apologize for such matters in words. He would have tried, but he knew it would be useless, so he didn’t. It was the girl who instigated conversation again.

“It’s okay,” she said, smiling sadly. It was strange how child-like she could be, and how rowdy at the same time. “I was only three when it happened. I don’t remember her much. Dad loves Paris a lot, though.”

Sirius tried to smile back. “There’s a saying that every man has two countries,” he began. “One his own, and the other France.”

“Paris, more like,” the girl enjoined happily. “Paris is like – a country within itself. It’s beautiful. I can’t tell you how much.” She was speaking with energy now, and he was letting himself get carried away in her childlike enthusiasm. He couldn’t help it, she was just too – well, he didn’t know what she was. As she opened her mouth to continue her praise of Paris, he just had to interrupt her.

“You don’t seem very sleepy now, Miss –”

The girl threw him a withering look. “What are you trying to say?”

“Merely that you seem very interested in Paris.”

The girl suddenly smiled, stars lighting up in her eyes. “You know what? You’re right. Paris looks lovely when evening sets in. I spend hours by River Seine, driving my car along the coast. Staring up at Eiffel Tower, enjoying the rains. Alone.”

“Alone?” Sirius repeated, surprised out of his silence. It seemed strange that such a pretty girl could actually be left alone in Paris. Paris was – according to Uncle Alhpred, considering he, himself, had never been there before – known for its couples throughout the world. The City of Love, some called it.

The girl nodded, quiet. Silence fell.

Sirius looked up and realized that they were nearing the harbour now. It was astounding, how quickly time had flown by. They were almost at their destination now, and he had had no idea of the distance they had covered in what seemed like a very short time. Daybreak was finally taking over the starless sky. The cerulean sea expanded east, west, north and south of the steamer, reflecting the first, feeble rays of sunlight, making the port far, far away in the distance look like the rainbow coloured lining of a huge shell.

He glanced back at the girl and, as the sun began to make its clumsy attempt to get up, spreading weak rays everywhere in the process, he saw the girl’s face properly for the first time. She had short, blonde hair that curled an inch or two beneath her ears; short, blonde hair that looked exceedingly pretty in the half light. And her eyes – They were an extremely deep blue, the blue of an ocean at its deepest, just before the water transofmrs into sable.

“Nearly there,” she said out loud, breaking into his thoughts.

Sirius looked up. “Yeah. Listen, do you plan on telling me your name anytime soon?”

The girl shrugged. “You never asked,” she said bluntly.

Sirius could only look at her, stunned. Come to think of it, he hadn’t. “Sorry,” he said after several seconds had elapsed. “May I know it, then?”

“Pascal Beyoncé.” She held out her hand and Sirius, unlike some people, did not refuse to take it.

“I gave you my hand to shake, not to hold,” Pascal said sarcastically after a while.

Sirius immediately let it go.
