A tale inspired by one of the most beautiful romances I’ve ever read: The First City of Love


For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Maxie, and this is my fourth Fan Fiction on SS. My others include a recently finished FF called Ecstasy: A Marauder Time Romance – Sa13+, a soon-to-end ficcie, KasTan – Sa13+ and a one-shot called Love Takes Two.

Point to Remember: Sirius is nineteen years of age, and has been living with an uncle of his. Incidentally, I’m not going to go cannon here, so please don’t badger me about it. Cheers.



Crash.

Night was growing old, and darkness enveloped the starless heavens above. Purple Sails, the aged apple of Captain Derrick’s eyes, shook badly as, with a blinding crash, towering waves crashed into its side, causing it to lean heavily against the currents. It was a wonder it did not topple over. But the streamer was used to the precarious rocks in the vicinity, the unlit night sky, and the perilous waves. For over a decade, it had beat its hazardous way through them, still at as unfriendly relations with them as it had been thirteen years ago. In the over-crowded cabin, steam was rising from the darkened surfaces of hot, overflowing mugs.

“Ye wan’ sumfin?” The short, bald man at the counter asked gruffly. Sirius Black nodded, sitting down on the only vacant seat by him. “A coffee, please.”

The bald man jerked his head in what was evidently a yes, and began to mix everything that Sirius was sure did not go in the making of a coffee into a fresh mug. Maybe muggles made coffee differently than wizards. Yeah, that was it. He would have to be satisfied with that explanation.

“Here ya go, now get outta tha’ seat, ole Ciya’s here.”

Sirius got hastily up as the hefty mug, brimmed to the very top with pitch black coffee, was shoved right into his stomach. Some of it spilled over his T-shirt, and he resisted the temptation to swear loudly. “Ole Ciya,” the stocky woman who helped the man run “his little cabin” shoved him out of the way as she plopped heavily down on to the seat, her blonde hair windswept. She lit a cigarette and began to smoke. Sirius looked away, sighing.

Muggles. You got all sorts in over-crowded, steamer cabins. As he wended his way out of the place, somehow managing to get out of the doorway blocked by people lying literally everywhere – on sturdy chairs, worn-out sofas, spring-less mattresses and even on the bare, untidily tiled floor – he breathed a sigh of relief. He wondered what good his uncle had thought it would do him, spending some time with muggles. He still remembered Uncle Alphred’s parting words, “Trust me, sonny, a vacation by the sea’ll do you good. Muggles freshen your spirits.”

Making his way out on to the deck, he wrapped his coat tighter around his body to keep himself warm. The wind cut his cheeks, each jet of air a knife against his skin. He had never expected it to be so chilly out here; but, then again, it was the first time he was boarding a steamer, and one that would keep him there all night, too. Unfriendly waves crashed into the thing again, sending a shiver up his spine. It was just too cold.

As he half felt his way around the place, his eyes fell on an object in the distant. Upon nearing it, he realized that it was a person, lying fast asleep across three, extremely rusty, weather-beaten chairs. Even though the waves sent them trembling over and over again, the ceaseless shuddering did not seem to bother the sleeper lying across them in the least. Whoever it was, “it” – he had no idea whether it was a he or a she – was wrapped tightly in a thick, red cloak, plus a hood that absolutely hid it from view.

“Hello,” he said politely, just to test if the person was awake.

Apparently, it was not. He repeated his greeting.

There was a faint noise from within the cloak, as the person wrapped inside stirred. It was too dark for Sirius to see the face, but he realized that it was a young girl.

“What’s your problem?” she snapped.

“Sorry,” he said at once. “I was just . . . well, bored.” He sat down.

The girl turned to look at him, and her hood slid off her head a little, revealing strands of golden hair that looked too, too bright in the gloom, considering how suddenly they had been revealed. She held up her chin, and continued to stare at him. “Are you a ghost?” she asked finally.

Sirius just had to laugh. All snappiness gone out of it, her voice now held nothing but a truckload of innocence.

“No, I’m a traveller.”

“Don’t travellers have names?” she asked fiercely. Her tone changed so suddenly, Sirius had no idea what to expect next. First she had been quick to anger, then she had sounded as if nothing more innocent than her existed on the planet – and now? Now she sounded severe. Undaunted. Fearless.

He smiled, holding out his hand. “Sirius Black.”

I had the whole story in mind, but I wasn't sure whom to have as the main character. Then my heart mind landed on my Part-Sirius's love. XD

The weather was growing wilder now. The wind picked up, howling as it swathed the old, weather-beaten steamer. Sirius wished he could perform a simple charm and dry his clothes. The girl was looking down at his extended hand now, impartial to the rough weather in her surroundings, and did not shake it.

“Sirius is a star,” she said after a moment, her eyes round and wide like a little child’s, who has just realized a secret of the utmost significant. In the darkness, it was impossible for Sirius to discern their colour. “Are you really a star?” she asked innocently. “Can I wish on you?”

Sirius laughed again, his mind devoid of any idea as to where this conversation was headed. Frankly, he was perplexed; it would have been hard for anyone to make out this woman. It was as if she was a different person with every new statement she uttered. “No,” he said, smiling slightly. “Quite a number of people in my family have been named after stars. Me, for instance.”

She nodded, her hood slipping over her hair again. “Okay,” she said, looking rather disappointed. “I’m going back to sleep now. You should sleep, too.” And, without another word, she bundled her crimson cloak tighter around herself, settling to sleep as if he did not exist at all.

It would not have taken a genius to see that Sirius was clearly taken aback. Getting up, his hands in the pocket of his jeans, he ran a hand through his by-now-wet hair. She could have told me her name, at least, he thought in silence; it was useless to ask now. The girl really had fallen asleep again. Looking at her cloak-wrapped form on the rusting chairs, Sirius shrugged, quietly wending his way back to the steamer’s cabin. Maybe he could find better company there.
