| Hermione Discussion # 17: Hermione in Ravenclaw? Neville's Bravery
Banner by Vishu Hermione in Ravenclaw? The Sorting Hat had considered putting Hermione into Ravenclaw at first before it decided on Gryffindoor. Does that mean that she was more brave than she was smart? If she had ended up in Ravenclaw, would she have made the same choices she made throughout the series (like: freeing Sirius, revolt against Umbridge, etc.)? Would she still have been best friends with Ron and Harry? How would the series have turned out if she weren’t there to lead Harry and Ron into the right path?

Hogwarts RPG Name: Rebecca Parker Fifth Year | Honey Punk Positively Adored In all honesty, I don't think she would have been nearly as great of a witch if she had been placed in Ravenclaw. I think she would have became consumed with school work, being the best, leading study groups with fellow Ravenclaws and competing against them to be perfect at everything. I mean, sure, she could've developed into the smartest witch of all time, but being a Gryffindor she learned so much more about life, y'know? So many more opportunities and challenges.
As for things like the revolt against Umbridge... if she had been a Ravenclaw, I couldn't see her having the courage to do that. I think that being placed into Gryffindor and being around those courageous and bold definitely affected her positively to be more daring.
I think... she would not have been friends with Harry and Ron, and that Harry would have died without her help. Pretty much.
I can't help but wonder who she WOULD have been friends with though. Could she have been one to hang out with Cho and Marietta? Or would she not have any friends and be the annoying know-it-all that she was in the beginning of her first year?

I totally agree with you!
Harry and Ron kinda pushed the annoying know-it-all out of her. And, being around them definitely boosted her courage and bravery. I mean, it's one thing to want to do something, and another thing to actually do it. She is the brains of the team, but Ron and Harry definitely had a lot of guts and determination.
Hermione is Hermione, and Harry nor Ron could've gotten through their battles without her being with them.
For the sorting hat to put her into Gryffindoor, though, she must have had more courage than knowledge, and that's saying something. I think, when Hermione wants something to be done, she goes after it with her all, and never rests until it's completed, and that calls for a lot of courage.

I believe Hermione belongs in Gryffindor. Even though she is very intelligent she still believes in what is right, and therefore does a lot of courageous things throughout the series to make sure everything is the way it should be. Hermione may be smart but she also has guts, and is therefore a true Gryffindor.
