Hmmm...
I guess someone should actually be a... News anchorman!
Someone to deliver news or such to the thread about the state of the country.
It would be really interesting.

Hopefully I'll get to posting some history stuff this weekend... =]

History

As mentioned in the welcome thread, Israel was officially made a State/Country in May 1948; 61 years ago. As for today, there are MANY quite awesome little facts about a country that is barely the size of New Jersey (which is a tiny, overpopulated U.S. State for those who don't know )

{Credit must be given to Taglit-Birthright for these facts}

1. Israel has the highest number of companies traded on Wall Street (after the U.S. and Canada).
2. In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of startup companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of startup companies than any other country in the world, except the US (3,500 companies mostly in hi-tech).
3. Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds, right behind the U.S.
4. Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined.
5. On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech start-ups.
6. Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship - and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world.

7. Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees per capita in the world.
8. Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000 people - as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.
9. Twenty-four percent of Israel's workforce holds university degrees - ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland - and 12 percent hold advanced degrees.

Declaration of Independence

The ceremony to proclaim independence was to be held in the Tel Aviv Museum (today known as Independence Hall) but was not widely publicised as it was feared that the British Authorities might attempt to prevent it or that the Arab armies might invade earlier than expected. An invitation was sent out by messenger on the morning of 14 May telling recipients to arrive at 15:30 and to keep the event a secret. The event was to start at 16:00 (a time chosen so as not to breach the sabbath), and was to be broadcast live as the first transmission of the new radio station Kol Yisrael.

At 16:00, Ben-Gurion opened the ceremony by banging his gavel on the table, prompting a spontaneous rendition of Hatikvah, soon to be Israel's national anthem, from the 250 guests. On the wall behind the podium hung a picture of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, and two flags, later to become the official flag of Israel.

After telling the audience "I shall now read to you the scroll of the Establishment of the State, which has passed its first reading by the National Council", Ben-Gurion proceeded to read out the declaration, taking 16 minutes, ending with the words "Let us accept the Foundation Scroll of the Jewish State by rising" and calling on Rabbi Fishman to recite the Shehecheyanu blessing.

History of the Flag

Israel 55th Independence day on Tuesday (year 2003), was an opportunity for the daily "Yedi'ot A'haronot" to publish a piece about the IL national flag.
Here is my translation:
"Transformation of a flag by Moshe Ronen

As Indepemdence day approach, we hang the national flag on public buildings, in the streets and on most private houses. We all know the national flag and emblem. We accepted them as such and didn't gave any thought to the way thoy were designed.

The secrets behind the designation of the the national flag and the official symbols, are recealed in a unique exhibition, opened in this weekend at the gallery of "A'huzat Bayit" in Ra'anana. The assence of the exhibition is dedicated to Ricahrd Ar'el, who was the graphical advisor to the government of Israel in the first ten years of independence. Ar'el was responsible to the design of the national flag and supervised the choosing and designing of its symbols, official papers and its stamps in the first ten years of existance.
The initial idea for designing the flag was provided by the "prophet of the state" Benyamin Ze'ev Herz'l. He suggested seven gold stars to mark seven daily working hours, on white background, to mark our new and pure life according to his vision. Photo of the script in Herzl hand writing is also presented in the exhibition in "A'huzat Bayit". David Wolfson, one of the Zionist leaders in Herzl, suuggested to add two light blue [T'helet] stripes to the flag to remind the "Talith", and between them, he suusseted, to scribe the Magen David (star of David- which was adopted by the Jews of Prague in the 17th Cent. and in the 19th Cent. became a known Jewish symbol). Herzl didn't gave up of the seven gold stars, but suggested that six of them will be placed in the ends of the Magen David points, and the seventh will be scribed above it.

The blue white flag with the Magen David in its center became the flag of the Zionist Movement. However, 50 years after Herzl proposal, when the state was established, its leaders afraid to make it the the national flag. They were afraid that Jews that will hoist it in their countries, will be suspected in double loyalty.

For half a year of independence, the state of Israel didn't have an official flag. In the heat of arguments on the flag, the Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion suggested: Lets go to the public and hear its opinion. The government decided to issue a proclamation asking the public to make proposals to the national flag. In the proclamation was written that the flag must be blue-white, however other colors could be submitted too. About 170 proposals were submitted and all of them were given to Ar'el. Most of the proposals were verbals and Ar'el was required to produce them in graphical way. He took out few dozens which look mor serious then other and painted them on hard paper in order to present them to the government and the committee of miniters in carch on symbols and ceremonies that was already exists.
Most of the proposals was according to the government request, in blue-white colours, but some proposed to incooporate also red or orange colors, colors of royalty, in the flag.

Ar'el prefered proposal was denied. He preffer a three parts flag [triband] reminding the French or Italian flags, with two blue rectangles in the sides and cenral white rectangle charged with blue Magen David.

However, most of the first government members preffered two horizontal stripes on white background insted of two vertical rectangles. they explained that one line reminds the sky and the other one reminds the sea.

Another change was made at the last moment. The color of the stripes and Magen David, supposed to be light blue (as in the Talith) became blue for being more prominant and easier to be seen at top of Israli flag ship's mast at sea. On 28 October 1948 the provisionally council of state determined that the final draw made by Richard Ar'el is Israel official flag."

Hatikvah התקווה

Hatiḳṿah (Hebrew: הַתִּקְוָה‎, The Hope), is the national anthem of Israel. The anthem was written by Naphtali Herz Imber, a secular Galician Jew, who moved to Israel in the early 1880s. The anthem’s theme revolves around the nearly 2000-year-old hope of the Jewish people to be a free and sovereign people in the Land of Israel, a national dream that would eventually be realized with the founding of the modern State of Israel in 1948.

The text of Hatikvah was written by the Galician-Jewish poet Naphtali Herz Imber in Zolochiv (Ukraine) in 1878 as a nine-stanza poem named Tikvatenu (“Our Hope”). the poem was subsequently adopted as the anthem of Hovevei Zion and later of the Zionist Movement at the First Zionist Congress in 1897. The text was later revised by the settlers of Rishon LeZion, subsequently undergoing a number of other changes.

Adoption as national anthem
When the State of Israel was declared in 1948, ha-Tikvah was unofficially proclaimed the national anthem. However, it did not officially become the national anthem until November 2004, when it was sanctioned by the Knesset in an amendment to the “Flag and Coat-of-Arms Law” (now called “The Flag, Coat-of-Arms, and National Anthem Law”).

SPOILER!!: Words of the National Anthem

1967: Six-Day War
מלחמת ששת הימים Milhemet Sheshet Ha‑Yamim

War fought in 1967 between Israel on one side and Egypt, Jordan and Syria on the other side. The active Arab states received aid from Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Algeria.

From its beginning to the end, the war lasted 132 hours and 30 minutes (less than 6 days). But the duration was shorter on 2 of the 3 fronts: on the Egyptian side only 4 days, and on the Jordanian side only 3 days. It was only on the Syrian side that the war lasted the whole 6 days.

The war could have lasted longer than it did, and the result could have been different and less humiliating for the Arabs, as their the power of their armies was far from depleted. But there were mainly 2 reasons why the Arab nations gave in: 1. The lost territories held relatively few inhabitants (as was the case with Sinai for Egypt and Golan Heights for Syria) or was occupied territory (as was the case with Gaza Strip for Egypt and West Bank for Jordan). 2. The capitals of each of the three countries were threatened (Israeli troops were less than 100 km from Cairo and less than 50 km from Damascus and Amman).

The war was the most dramatic of all wars fought between Israel and the Arab nations, resulting in a depression in the Arab world lasting many years, changing the mentalities and political orientations among the people, as well as resulting in increased tensions between the Arab countries and the Western world. While the actual material and human losses were dramatic enough, Arab weakness in this war compared to Israeli efficiency will probably not be forgot for still many decades to come.

The war left Israel with the largest territorial gains from any of the wars the country had been involved in: Sinai and Gaza Strip were captured from Egypt, East Jerusalem and West Bank from Jordan and Golan Heights from Syria.

For the international society the war resulted in a closure of the Suez Canal for 8 years, resulting in increase of freight prices in international trade.

History:
1967 May: Forces on both Arab and Israeli sides of the borders are mobilized.
June 5: Israel attacks Egypt, Syria and Jordan. Israel achieved great victories immediately, especially on the Egyptian front, where Egyptian air crafts are wiped out after effective bombing of air strips.

June 7: The strategically important Egyptian Sharm el-Sheikh is captured.
— Jordan surrenders to Israel, after having lost East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

June 8: The entire Sinai comes under Israeli control. Later that evening, Israeli fights on the Egyptian front cease.
June 10: Syria surrenders, after seeing Golan Heights come under Israeli control.

1973: Yom Kippur War
also called Ramadan War and October War

War fought between Israel on one side, and Egypt and Syria on the other, backed by Iraq and Jordan and supported economically by Saudi Arabia.
The war lasted for 3 weeks, and started on October 6, 1973 and ended on October 22 on the Syrian front and on October 26 on the Egyptian front. The war and its outcome represent a watershed in Middle Eastern history. For the first time, vulnerability on Israeli side was evident, both Syria and Egypt proved their new strength, both military and in organization. It also left Israel with loss of territory, even if that was not its own, but occupied territory from the Six Day War.

The names of this conflict stems from the important Jewish festival of Yom Kippur, and the Muslim month of Ramadan, in which the annual fast of Sawm is performed. From a rare moment of flabbiness in Israeli intelligence and in the government, Israel did not expect any attacks from its neighbours just at this point in time. The background for this is that 2 very important religious festivals coincided in both Islam and Judaism, two festivals in which there was a prohibition against warfare.

Egypt and Syria used this laxity to launch a surprise attack on Israel. The goal of the war was to win back lost Arab territory from preceding wars, first in 1947-49, then 1956 and especially in the last, the Six-Day War of 1967. Following these wars there had been no political progress in solving the situation of lost territory and large groups of Palestinian refugees. A deep frustration had come over the entire Arab world, which came to motivate strong sentiments, and new political orientations in the populations. At the eve of the 1973 war, the Arab nations felt that they had every excuse to wage war against Israel.

The total cost off the war was estimated to US$7 billion on both Israeli and Egyptian side, but much of the operations on Arab side were financed by Saudi Arabia.

History
1973 October 6: Surprise attacks are launched on Israel controlled territories by Egypt and Syria. Egypt attacks their own territory of Sinai that is under Israeli occupation, while Syria attacks their own territory of the Golan Heights that is also under Israeli occupation. Syria gains several victories during the first days.

October 11: After initial victories the Syrian-led troops have lost the Golan Heights, and Israeli troops are now advancing into Syria.

October 16: After Egyptian victories on the Sinai, advancing about 10 km into the peninsula, Israel starts getting their first victories, and on this day they are crossing the Suez Canal.

October 22: A cease fire is arranged by UN on the Syrian front, where the two nations return to pre-war border lines.

October 26: Cease fire on the Egyptian front. US-led talks soon results in a disengagement agreement between Egypt and Israel, and Egypt is left with an increased territory compared to before the war — full control over both shores of the Suez Canal is regained, and a strip of land along the first half of the western coast of Sinai is gained. UN forces are stationed along the Suez Canal to monitor the agreement.
