| | | Yates doesn’t want to overdo special effects
A recent article cited several directors explaining what moves them to cut scenes from their films in order to present audiences with a reasonable running time. Order of the Phoenix director David Yates was among them and commented how audiences can be overwhelmed by multiple action scenes or too many special effects. Quote:
Sometimes they overstay their welcome just by that little, tiny percent. There's a sweet spot for running length where the audience comes out feeling elated, feeling they actually want more. Reaching that sweet spot takes a lot of discipline.
You just have to let things go, sometimes. It's amazing how you think you could never live without a scene or a moment, yet frankly, the movie's better off without it.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Emerson Gray. Fourth Year | G1GGL3R! *giggles* My GarBear Hey, I totally agree. Having too many special effects will ruin it and might not be able to keep a sense of realism throughtout the whole thing, if that makes sense.

Yeah that's good in theory but some stuff you just can't do without special effects.... and I don't know are they doing a lot with green/blue screen this movie?

Yeah, to much special effects does tend to ruin the movie. A lot of scenes/parts of OotP probably were taken out becaue you have to get a 870-ish paged book into a 2-ish hour movie.

Yes I know it would be too much money and not many people would stay and watch the whole thing but how about this. If I was on the commitee that approved the movie I was say no and throw the book at him saying here is your script get to it.
You can't leave all the stuff out. It ruins the books. Ruins everything.

It makes me sad how much they cut out for the movie. I know they have to, but it still makes me sad.

Cut scenes make me sad to even though i know they have to fit it into 2 hours! Special effects are needed a lot- i mean Hogwarts is a magic school! Just hope they didnt under do it!

I realize that cutting must be done, but the trick is knowing what cuts will be accepted by the audiences who have already read the book. I know that Yates has cut all the Quiddich seems which seem so important to parts of the story! It also seems most fans have been upset by this, including myself as it cheats Rupert's character so heavily. But only time will tell if Yates got it right. It will be difficult not going into the theater wanting to judge the movie against the book. I know I did this in GoF. It's like we automatically expect to see the book come to life before our eyes, and the movie just can't do that with a time constraint although I certainly would be willing to sit through a 4 - 5 hour edition if it was more book accurate! Generally, people don't want to sit that long!

He has a point there, though. Too much special effects and action can ruin a movie...

i hope that the scenes that "the movie's better of without" aren't any of the really really important ones from the book that he thinks the movie doesn't need

I agree. I hate it when you have thoes movies where the whole thing is done infront of a green screen. I'm glad that HP has both in it. They use real sets & they use special effcts also, which makes it awsome!!!

I agree that there has to be some cut scenes but hopefully they aren't good ones. I ALSO think that too many special effects can be bad!

That's a good idea. Too much special will have the movie not looking real at all...and that's going to suck.
