| | | Will 'Half-Blood Prince' beat 'Charlie'? E! Online speculates that ' Half-Blood Prince' could affect the takings of ' Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'; a WB film that opens on the same weekend as the book release.
They show that 'Harry' has in fact affected movie takings in the past; ' Order of the Phoenix', in 2003, had an affect on 'The Hulk'. Quote:
The fifth chapter, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was released in 2003. Retailing for $30, it sold a whopping 5 million copies its first 24 hours. That $150 million in first-day grosses for Scholastic far surpassed that revenue generated by the weekend's blockbuster movie opening: Universal's The Hulk, which took in $62 million in its three-day debut weekend.
However, it is pointed out that in a weekend, there is plenty of time to do both. Quote:
"It's an interesting concept that people even acknowledge that the Potter books are so popular that they have an effect on other media," says Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations. "But that said, the people who want to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will see Charlie. There's plenty of time for both."
Quote:
Adds Dergarabedian: "You can counterprogram a book or video to a movie opening, but once people make a decision to go see that movie, they'll do that--and buy whatever competing property is out there. To me [the Half-Blood Prince] is less problematic than two movies chasing the same audience."

I don't see the problem. I'm buying HBP Saturday and seeing Charlie on Sunday. Quote:

Hm... I want to see Charlie and the Choc. factory but HBP comes first for me def. My dad was like go to the movies then the party, but i'll just wait to see the movie.
It will be interesting to see how it affects the movie though, seeing how it's a book and everything...

You could easily buy the book, then go to the movies after, then read the book when you get home, but some people want to read it as soon as they get it in their hands. lol

Maybe we'll see our kids come here one day.
That's the thing about Hogwarts.

| The book comes first! I don't even think that 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' will be screened in Romania; and if it did, still the book... |

You don't even have to make a choice. If you want to go and see Charlie, go and see it. No ones stopping you. Just buy the book on Saturday and see the film on Sunday. It's not really a big problem.

It really depends on how fast you read. I mean, personally, I couldn't wait until I see the movie to start reading it. I would definately have to skip the movie. If you are a fast reader, and are really patient with HBP then you could definately manage to squeeze in the movie.

Although reading might be considered more educational than watching a movie, although Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is based off of a book. Hmm. Hard to really say.

I may go see the movie but the book definitely comes first, after all I kinda think the new Charlie movie may ruin the original one

| I'm not really into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because it was one of those books I had to read in primary school and it sort of made me lose my enthusiasm about it. Its not really one of my favourite Roald Dahl books. So in my eyes HP will win over it anyday. The only movie that I really want to go and see is GoF in november. I never really like going to the cinema unless it is a film that I really want to see. Also shouldnt they be pleased if people would rather prefer to read. But I dont think the release of a book will cause a drop in cinema goers. And I think the only reason that the Hulk did so bad in the cinema was that it wasnt a really good movie. I watched it on DVD and I didnt think it was that good compared to some other comics book movies that have come out like Spiderman and X-men. In the end I think there is plenty of time for HP fans and people who want to see the movie to do both. (Doesnt include me though). |
