| | | 'Why I chose Harry Potter.'
Barry Cunningham, the publisher and managing director of Chicken House books, the founding publisher of Bloomsbury, talks to Fortune magazine about decision-making. He was the man who decided to publish ' Philosopher's Stone'. Quote:
I got the manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone [Sorcerer's Stone in the U.S.]. I read it that night, and you'd expect the sky to part and thunderclaps to sound—but it didn't. I just knew it was a great book.
I didn't know that a dozen publishers had turned it down or that the author, J.K. Rowling, had become utterly discouraged. I think everybody else passed on it for all the wrong reasons: It was long, the title was unusual, and the story is pretty dark. Rowling needed someone to see what it was, a story of bravery and danger and adventure but with great humor—as opposed to what it wasn't, a traditional children's book.
I choose books purely based on what I believe children will react to. If you carry the child within you, that's what works. You need a real ability to feel the hope, wonder, burning sense of injustice, fear, or rage of childhood—an unfettered mind that still dreams, that goes with the truth of story.

I didn't know that a dozen people had turned it down. I wonder what my summers would be like if she hadn't gone to him. I always[I] read Harry Potter in the summer.

i don't know why they turned it down it down either, but that publisher obviously knows what he's talking about, as his views are perfectly showing the right that hp fans have been trying to point out for ages!!! well done!

Very interesting! I think we can all take a little hope from this story. Even a great writer such as JKR went through quite a bit of rejection before the right person noticed her. Even she got discouraged. I feel that she is such a great inspiration to stick to our dreams.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo w. He's an adult and he said that? Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Totally true though...see it's a children's book...LOL. I like that line "...an unfettered mind that still dreams..." maybe he should write books too. It was a good choice no matter what. Someone give that man a raise. |

| That's nice to know though. I've always wondered what made the publisher decide that Harry Potter was as amazing as it truly is. |

I'm sure those publishers that turned JK Rowling down are now teetering over the nearest cliff edges they could get to...although that's the publishing business I suppose. Thank you JK Rowling and Bloomsbury for sustaining me through what would otherwise have been an insufferably dull three weeks of summer.

Good for him! J.K. was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for book publishers and to think that 12 of them deemed it unworthy. More power to the guy who actually decided to give it a chance.
