Post Why Harry Potter had to remain British

In a new interview with The Telegram David Heyman talks about discovering the Potter books and how and why he fought to retain the Britishness of the stories when they transfered to screen.

Quote:
“Hollywood is risk-adverse and what makes them feel secure is to have an American in the lead,” Heyman says. He’s prepared to forgive industry colleagues for proposing an Americanized Harry Potter. “This was before Harry Potter was the big phenomenon that he became, so they were entitled to that view. But for me, it would have destroyed the stories.

“For me, one of the things I responded to in these books is their Englishness. The story is very English. It has cultural specificity, but it has thematic and emotional universality.”

“We’ve all been through having our first crush, having our first kiss, suffering from confusion and social isolation, being embraced by friends and ostracized by them, having teachers you like and ones you don’t like — all these are moments that have been experienced by British kids and also by North American kids and people the world over.”

Im glad it remaind british with every thing ie actors & filming - as it is a Britsh story with British area's & way of life
I dont think other culture's could pull it off and it wouldnt have been such a sucesss and non britsh people just cant do the english accent as good as the english ( No offence)

But every 1 in the world goes through the same stuff as the book so that how every1 relates to it

Too right! Harry Potter is British, JK is British, the films are made in Britain - so there is no way that Harry could become an American thing. It would be just way too annoying. No offence, but I wouldn't like Harry Potter half as much as I do if he weren't a good old Brit.

It would be a little weird if the actors were American and there was all the american words in the films. It is British, So why Hollywood-ize it?

I don't think I'd have complained should they have used American actors...as long as those American actors used the British accents, and setting remained at Hogwarts in Britain instead of *cringe* some high school in California. It's a good thing, then, that they kept the actors British as well.

I think that the important thing is that, no matter what nationality the actors/filmmakers are, the films remain true to the book. Also, Heyman really hit the nail on the head when he said that people all over the world, no matter what nationality you are, have experienced their first time in a new school, making their best friend, succeeding or failing in a class, having a favorite and least favorite teacher, having their first kiss, etc. etc. Besides the magical world, Harry Potter unites all races/nationalities in the real elements because they are universal themes.

Although, they couldn't have mistrusted Americans too much because the screenwriters, Kloves and Goldenberg, are American, and Chris Colombus, the director of the first two films, is American. (In my opinion, I believe that the first two films, under Colombus, the films were the most canon, so I'm not objecting to any American involvement.) I'm just glad they kept the actors British because it's more authentic. Granted, many American actors can do a British accent, myself included. But I think that having these big Hollywood names would have reduced its feel.

I don't think it would've made much of a difference really, but the British accent does add more class

It disturbs me how arrogant some of these movie big-wigs must be!!! I could never invision Harry Potter in any form of American setting...led by an American actor or trio....it would have lost SO much in the attempt the movie would have been lost....it would be like trying to say McBeth was American, or Shakespear! The only bit of American that might have been allowed if the scene had called for it, was a shot of the American Witches tent during the Quidditch World Cup, like in the book, and it certainly was not needed in the movie! How would American film-makers like it if Brits were hired as lead to do a John Wayne type western or a Native American film set in England....after all they just started hiring real Native Americans for the parts rather than Hollywood top box office draws for the lead Native American parts in the last 10 - 15 years or so.... It just sickens me sometimes. There are places for all and many more where it doesn't matter, like Alan Rickman playing the lead in Snow Cake. But movies should remain true to their roots...Harry Potter IS British! Thank God for those who stand up for what they believe in!

It is an English book series so it definitely should remain that way in the films! Keep up the awesome work!
