| | |  WB cancels Phoenix preview screenings in Canada
Warner Bros. is stopping promotional screenings for all of its films in Canada, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, to prevent the films from being filmed illegally in theaters and then sold worldwide.
According to a rep for Warner Bros.: Quote:
We regret having to cancel our screenings in Canada, but our studio must take steps to protect not only our branded assets but our commitment to our filmmakers and to our distributors.
Film studios such as Warner Bros. have been trying to get the Canadian government to increase fines and punishments for the thieves. Allegedly, Canada is deemed responsible for a $225 million a year loss to the entertainment industry due to film piracy and trafficking, according to the U.S. International Intellectual Property Alliance. | |

That's sad that we have to pay for people who cannot wait to get the movie.
I don't mind if they cancel the theatre showing, and just buy the video when it comes out from a U.S site, but I really hope the movie release is still going.
It's unfortunate. It's hard to stop piracy now

What happened to commitment towards the fans? I suppose it's not that big a deal... I guess it's not the worst thing that could happen, I mean some people don't even get to watch the movies or read the books. But still... I'll miss the thrill of watching the trailers in big before a movie.

that's so mean! Seriously, there's worse piracy in other countries, why just Canada? Gosh, I can list a few counties (my brother bought like, 5 movies in China and all were pirated. That's just an example), but that's not nice... well yeah.
And piracy is everywhere anyways!
Sheesh, I'm SSOO mad now! *keeps fuming about it*
But yeah, it's not the worst thing that could happen...
But still!
No wonder I haven't seen ANY screenings in any of the theatres and movies I've seen. I've been wondering for so long why all these other places see them in the movie previews in the movie but not here...
Why couldn't I be living in the States during the release of OotP screenings instead of moving back to Canada two years ago?
