The Daily Mail reports that Warner Brothers have warned John Buechler, a film director who claims to have invented the character of Harry Potter, that his intention to make a big budget film featuring the character, could result in a legal battle.
In 1986 he made a film, Troll, featuring a character called Harry Potter Jr. He now intends to do a big budget re-make but Warner Brothers have warned they will defend the copyright. A search for a boy to star in the lead role will begin tomorrow. Quote:
His partner, Hollywood producer Peter Davy, said: "In John's opinion, he created the first Harry Potter.
"J.K. Rowling says the idea just came to her. John doesn't think so.
"There are a lot of similarities between the theme of her books and the original Troll.
"John was shocked when she came out with Harry Potter."
Jo maintains that she has never seen the film. Quote:
Warner Bros spokesman Scott Rowe said last night: "If these producers intend to remake Troll they'd better tread carefully not to infringe on our rights."
UPDATE: The story originally posted by the Daily Mail has been removed because J.K. Rowling's reps stated it was "inaccurate and defamatory," according to SyFyPortal.
In an interview with Troll director John Buechler, SyFy learned that Buechler was not interested in fighting with Rowling over copyright issues. Quote:
Buechler has not sought any legal remedies over the use of the Harry Potter name or even his magical background from Rowling, and it's unclear if he ever will do so.
According to Buechler himself: Quote:
Harry Potter Jr. is based on the character first introduced to the world in 1986 in the original motion picture. Harry Potter Jr. is very like the character in the original.

If all that he's saying is true...which I definitely think isn't...why didn't he come out earlier? The books are done and the films are about to end as well so why now?

I don't remember hearing ANYTHING of this sort until just now, this is crazy!!! i haven't even heard of this John's guy supposed movie Troll that he apparently made in 1986?!?! :s just weird that he waited longer than 10 years to finally bring it up?!?! The guy doesn't stand a chance, anyone could write a script and put an older date on it, doesn't mean that it's the truth...anywho, Jo will win hands down, she's amazing!!!

OMG, more legal action! Harry Potter has more legal troubles than any other book I know.
Interesting that there was a Harry Potter Jr. in another movie, but this guy has to realize that most of the world thinks about JK'S character when they hear the name Harry Potter. People are going to think he stole the name if he remakes this film. People don't usually think, "Oh, isn't that the guy from Troll?" when they hear the name.

EDIT: I just IMDBed "Troll" and it looks like a crap movie. It's got a 3.3/10 rating.
Synopsis:
A wicked troll king in search of a mystical ring that will return him to his human form invades a San Francisco apartment complex where a powerful witch lives.

Ok, I knew there was a movie with Harry Potter as a troll. Didn't see it....who did....
I can understand this guy wanting to capitalize, but he must know a remake will never fly. At best, he can re-release the old one. Everybody will know what's going on. There might be a few that are curious and will watch it, but he'll hit the bigtime with it.
How many other names have been used before somebody has a hit that just happens to have the same name....come on, how many real-life guys are named Harry Potter....it's certainly not a unique name...
