Videos: Dan Radcliffe talks The Trevor Project & his involvement
A new interview with Daniel Radcliffe recorded by the Associated Press earlier this week will be streamed in a matter of minutes. During it, Dan is expected to talk about his participation with The Trevor Project. We will be updating this post with highlights from the interview.
• From The Trevor Project center, Dan spoke about growing up with bullying, and meeting and getting along with the gay community of New York last year while doing Equus on Broadway.
• Dan participated in a PSA for The Trevor Project, stating that all he mentions is that it is a hotline for the LGBTQ community.
UPDATE: Dan spoke to MTV as well about the Trevor Project earlier today and what he hopes it will achieve. The video can be seen below to those in the US.
"It's something I've always been quite passionate about," Radcliffe explained. "Because I grew up around gay men, it was always a natural thing to me. It was never something I ever gave a second thought to."

"Some are gay, some are straight — didn't make any difference to me," Radcliffe said of his own personal upbringing, which unfortunately isn't always the case. "When I went to my second school, I heard terms like 'poof' and 'hom-' getting thrown around. It never occurred to me that some people might have a problem with it."

"I remember being quite shocked when I was young," Radcliffe remembered of his early encounters with homophobia. "And now I am in a position where I can help an amazing thing like The Trevor Project."

This was a great interview. It was very short, but it was nice to hear about the Trevor Project and why Dan got involved. He's a really amazing person and even though it sucks that the Trevor Project is necessary in the first place...I'm glad that they're there for the people who need them. No one should feel so bad about themselves that they want to take their own lives. Discrimination against people because of their race, sex, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation is still too big of a problem. It's 2010 and seriously needs to stop.
There is actually a bit that was not included in the video interview that made me think Dan needs to choose his words a little more wisely, however. The interview was printed in the Entertainment section of our local paper, and Dan said he "hates" anyone who discriminates against the LGBT community. I think what the Trevor Project is doing is amazing and remarkable, but that's just not the right word to use.
^ As strong a word as that is, it is understandable why he'd feel that passionately.
I think this is a remarkable thing for Dan to do, especially in such a public way, particularly, as he says, he's a straight man.
Oh it's absolutely amazing, suicide is never the way out of anything, NEVER, and we do know there are certain groups of people who are at a higher risk of thinking to go down that path, but to break the cycle of hatred, to say you hate someone because they hate someone, it's just not the right way to express yourself.

Agreed. It's a vicious cycle. And though it angers me equally, I think it's a waste of energy to hate people whose opinions don't matter to you.
