Video: J.K. Rowling & Daniel Radcliffe talk Harry Potter's leadership role in series
Warner Bros released a new clip from J.K. Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe's lengthy interview from last year, the extended version of which will be available on the Harry Potter Wizard's Collection, out September 7. The Wizard's Collection will contain 15 extra minutes than the interview that was featured on the Blu-ray set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, including the segment below.
In this feature, Dan and Jo reminisced about a discussion they had during the filming of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2006, and how it was necessary for Harry to become a leader well before the final battle. That, and where Jo Rowling got Lily Evans' surname from, can be viewed below.
Daniel Radcliffe: In the fifth film, you came to the set, and we had probably had the biggest talk about the character, even though it wasn’t major thing, but I was asking you questions about the relevance of Dumbledore’s Army and how important that is in terms of what will happen later. I remember what you said to me, that it’s very important because at some point Harry will have to lead large numbers of people.
J.K. Rowling: Yeah, the only real resistance, the only organized resistance really. I always knew the final battle would happen at Hogwarts. So that’s where all this was working towards. Along the way I had to set it up so Harry could become a leader of some form of resistance movement, because it was far too implausible. I remember that talk – I remember that talk vividly.
Dan: And on the wall, in my room, I had just done a big project where I had taken pictures of lots of authors off the internet and written little biographies about them underneath and put their names up. I did loads of them; I can definitely remember you picking one.
Jo Rowling: It was George Eliot.
Dan: Let’s talk about the relevance of George Eliot.
Jo Rowling: When I was looking for maiden name for Lily, I chose Evans on the basis that it was George Eliot’s real name.
Dan: See, that’s wonderful. I don’t think anybody knows that, do they?
Jo Rowling: No, it was just one of those – it was quite random things, but sometimes, for strange reasons, you use a name that always thereafter means more to you than it does to anyone else. Yeah, I do remember that.
