| | | Vatican broadcasts papal opinion on Potter Previous reports have claimed that the current Pope made past remarks about the Potter series that were negative. Gabriele Kuby wrote an anti-Potter book (Harry Potter - Gut Oder Bose (Harry Potter - Good or Evil) and sent it to Pope Benedict (then Cardinal Ratzinger). She was sent two letters in 2003 which were supposedly authored by the Cardinal showing his support for her text.
The Vatican have today aired their opinion on the series explaining that the remarks made by the Cardinal may have been misinterpreted.
A transcript can be read here courtesy of the Catholic Insider.
Monsignor Fleedwood is quoted as saying: Quote:
What that subtle seduction was, was not specified, which makes me think it was a generic answer.
She (Gabriele) sent me her book, and I found it a very unsatisfactory book. I don't think she understands English humour.
Quote:
I said to the people present: 'did anyone in this room grow up without stories about witches and fairies and magic and spells and mystery and so on and so forth?', and everyone seemed to agree that none of us had grown up without those things. And then I said: 'did it make us into enemies of the faith, or enemies of God, or ennemies of the Church?' And people seemed to say: 'no, no'. And I said: 'well, I can't see any problem with Harry Potter, because, really, all the stories are about the victory of good over evil'.
The unfortunate thing is, people call it a 'cult book' and then mad people say: 'oh, it's a cult' - meaning a religious cult, and it's not!
Quote:
But I remain firmly convinced that the Harry Potter novels are very well written. They are written on the classical plot of good versus evil in the standard way that the old myths were written. The characters are built up around that: the goodies and the baddies so to speak, and I can't see that that's a bad thing for children, when goodness, and the people on the side of goodness are portrayed as the ones who will eventually win. Harry's ennemies resort to all sorts of evil things, and they are the ones who loose in the end. I don't see what's wrong with that, and I can't see that does any harm to children.
What my advice would still be to parents: if you're in doubt, read the books yourselves, the first one, that's the shortest one, and see what you think. Don't simply rely on somebody else's opinion, not even on my opinion, since it's only an opinion.

Ok, now that sounds very reasonable. Much more open minded. I'm glad, he made some excellent points. I'm not sure of the earlier remarks, so I 'm not sure how they were misinterpreted. I'm left wondering why the sudden public 'apparent' change in opinion on HP?

Yah I've been getting ALOT of Criticism on hp...
That's awesome, And all the things tehy said were true... Hp is just like all the imaginary things that get us to think creative and let our mind imagine. Quite cool, I think... Too bad my parents don't think so... However, If we explain it to them, they can't stop us from doing what we like...

That is exactly what I tell parents who come into the store. Don't go AAAAH MY KIDS ARE GOING TO BE EVIL because you didn't have enough sense to actually check out the book. And if you still refuse to let the kid read it, so be it.
[rant]What really ticks me off is parents letting kids read it because "it's so popular". So that's more important? If a kid isn't ready to handle the "darker" parts, don't let them read it. Yet. They can make up their minds when they're 9, 10, 11 and up. But 6-year-olds shouldn't be reading th3 5th book [/rant]

Anyway, I sort of agree with parents letting kids read HP because it's "popular" but if they even have the slightest doubt of the content, they really should read it first themselves.
Actually, I just want kids to read. I think that's the most important thing. And it's not like Harry Potter is an "adult" book. It is classified as a kid's book, so why not have kids read?? Is it the whole cult thing?? (which by the way still makes me laugh.... a cult... )

We spent time here. We made friends here. That's a part of us.
Cause Hogwarts is bigger than any of us, of any of it's founders,
and it's going to be around long after we're gone.
Maybe we'll see our kids come here one day.
That's the thing about Hogwarts.
