Post UPDATED: JK HBP Castle Conference

The following is information as to how you can enter to be one of the 70 junior reporters who will attend Edinburgh Castle on July 15th to hear JK read from 'Half-Blood Prince' at midnight.

Winners will be given a signed copy of the book and will be sent to a 'Reading Room' to consume the novel. Then on July 17th, they will attend a Conference with Jo Rowling to ask her about the contents of the book.

The contests are now underway and will pick winners from Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Below are the competitions I know of, so far. I will update this thread periodically.

Please remember, you must come from the country under which the competition is listed and you must be between the ages of 8 and 16.

*

Canada

Rain Coast Books contest starts on June 1st and closes on June 16th. Check back for more information on that, in the given time period. The grand prize also provides roundtrip airfare, four nights accommodation and ground transportation. A special password must be obtained by visiting various Canadian bookstores, Amazon.ca or Raincoast's web site.

Chapters Bookstores Click the link and write why you or your child is the world's biggest Harry Potter fan, in 50 words or less.

The Globe and Mail requires you to type in a password from the physical edition of the newspaper and give personal details. The closing date is June 24th.

Straight have a contest - enter your personal details on the above page and then phone the hotline and explain why you should be a reporter - you've got a minute to explain why so don't take too long about it! The contest closes on June 16th 2005.


UK

Bloomsbury - click on the link and fill in the form. The contest closes June 1st 5PM UK Time.

The Daily Record - Call the phone number given and name the title of the new book. The contest ends at non on May 30th 2005.

The Daily Mirror - you have to draw/paint a picture of your fave character or creature, answer the quiz questions and write in less than 25 words why you want to be a Harry Potter coorespondent. Entries must be sent via post by May 19th 2005.

The Sun is also running a competition. Invent a new Hogwarts' teacher, a friend for Harry or a magical beast. You may paint or draw the character of your choice. Entries must be sent to Harry Potter contest, Sun features, 1 Virginia street, London E98 1SN (include your name, address and phone number).

The Scotsman is also holding a contest - here's a scan of the article (thanks Kaz!) - you have to say what question you'd like to ask JK. The contest form can be found in 'Scotland on Sunday'.

The Sunday Mirror are also running a competition in which you have to answer, "Which subject would you be most likely to study at Hogwarts?". The choices are; catering, wizardry or dance. Simply call 0901 388 8214 with the correct answer.

The Times Educational Supplement has a competition where teachers can enter one pupil. Say in 200 words maximum why you think your pupil should get the job and include one question that they would like to ask JK Rowling. Entries from England should be sent to Potter Press Pack, Books Department, The Times Educational Supplement, Admiral House, 66-68 London E1W 1BX. Entries from Scotland should be sent to Potter Press Pack, TES Scotland, Scott House, 10 South St Andrew Street, Edinburgh EH2 2AZ. The closing date is June 10th.

The Evening News - Entrants must "prove their knowledge of all things Harry Potter by answering five questions which will appear in the paper over the coming week."

Amazon are to send 2 fans to the HBP Conference. All you have to do is download an apllication form and fill it in. The closing date is June 17th 2005.

WH Smith are running an in-store raffle. All you have to do to enter is pre-order HBP at one of their shops by June 27th. A scan of a contest leaflet can be seen here.

Tesco Tesco.com is asking children aged between 8 and 16 to enter the name and ingredients of their magic potion for the opportunity of a lifetime.


Ireland

The Observer - explain in less than 100 words why you want to meet J.K.Rowling. Send in your answer before 6pm on May 20 to the posting address or email address.

The Sunday Times wants its readers to review any book from the series and submit the question you would ask Jo at the conference. Entries should be sent to The Funday Times, PO Box 5073, Leighton Buzzard LU95 1AY. The closing date is May 25th.

The Irish Times has a competition in which you have to answer the following questions: When Sybill Trelawney is sacked, who replaces her? Dumbledore decides Harry must have special teaching- in what subject? After George and Fred back Ireland to defeat Bulgaria, what happens to the fake wand that is part of the bet? You must also write a descriptive summary of Harry's personality in less than 100 words. Entries should be sent to The Irish Times,
Harry Potter competition, Po Box 4601, Dublin 2. The closing date is June 1st.


Australia

If you pre-order 'Half-Blood Prince' at Dymocks you can register for the competition there. See in-store for further details.

The Sunday Telegraph - Fill out an entry form contained in the newspaper and answer the following questions:
» What are the names of Harry's two best friends at Hogwarts?
» Who is the darkest wizard of all whose name is never to be said?
» What is Harry and and Ron's favourite sport?
» What is the name of the family that raised Harry?
» What shape is the scar that Harry has on his face?
Entries should be sent to Harry Potter Competition, The Sunday Telegragh, PO Box 80, Eastern Suburbs Mail Centre N.S.W. The closing date is June 16th.

Sunday Star Times - Come up with three questions you would ask Jo if you met her in Edinburgh. Entries should be sent to Harry Potter Competition, Sunday Star-Times, PO Box 1074, Auckland. The closing date is June 16th.

Network Ten - call the hotline and leave your full name, address, age and daytime contact phone number. The closing date is Sunday 12 June 2005.

The Sunday Mail - fill in the entry form in today's ie liftout.

The Sunday Herald -- To enter you must call 1900 969 551 and leave your full name, address (including postcode), age, and daytime telephone number. You must be between 8-16 years old. The contest closes June 15, midnight. The winners will be published in the Sunday Herald Sun on June 19.


South Africa

Answer in under 200 words, what you would do if you had Harry Potter's magical powers for a day. Send entries to Sunday Times Harry Potter Competition, P.O. Box 1742Saxonwold, 2132 South Africa (include a school stamp and a teacher's signature). The deadline is June 3rd.


New Zealand

Sunday Star Times - The prize in this case includes $1,000 spending money. If you live in NZ, the contest's full rules are on C17 of this paper. You have to send the cutout from the newspaper, plus three questions you'd ask JKR, before June 16th, to:- Harry Potter Competition, Sunday Star-Times, PO Box, 1074, Auckland. Please include your name, address, age as of July 16, 2005, and phone number.


India

The Hindustand Times are running a competition. The children entering the contest will need to answer 3 questions and submit a 150-word essay on their favorite HP book. The last day to enter is June 25 and the winner will be announced in the July 1st edition of the paper. Entries may be submitted either by normal post or E-mail. The 3 questions are: What is the name of the latest Harry Potter book?
Who is the principal of Harry Potter's school? What are the names of Harry Potter's two best friends? Entries can be submitted to www.hindustantimes.com, or sent to "Chief Wizard", Sunday Hindustan Times, HT House, 18-20 Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi 110001.

I am 15 and live in Canada so I am eligible to enter but it says that someone over the age of 16 has to enter you. (for the Canadian Chapters one) Can I enter by myself? Someone please help!
