| | | The tragedy in South Asia
This has globally shocked millions, billions, the news that so far, 59,000 people have died and hundreds of thousands more people are lost as a result of the devastating South Asian tsunamis.
Our thoughts & prayers go out to all who've lost friends & family, all who are out there giving relief, all who are lost or dead and all the people still out there, caught or trapped because of the disaster.
In this thread, you can share your thoughts, prayers & wishes for those who you know to be Asia at this time, or just for the safety of all who live there.
The following are charitable organisations which are raising funds for the relief of those caught out by the tsunami. Please, if you, donate a little, as every bit helps. As we speak, the UN are sending out relief to 4/5 of the worst affected countries but every penny/cent given, counts.
If you know of any other organisations, please give them a mention too. The Penang Office of Human Development is asking for volunteer help Oxfam (UK) -- please use the 'gift aid' facility otherwise your donation will have tax taken off it (appalling I know, but it happens.) Oxfam (America) British Red Cross American Red Cross International Red Cross International Rescue Corps Give.org Doctors without Borders American Friends Service Commitee Care Mercy Corps
We also hope & pray that Kurisuchiina (Christina), a former Admin at SnitchSeeker, who is on holiday in Sri Lanka at the moment, stays safe and gets home safely.
Thanks to The Leaky Cauldron for the links. |

I think it was on Sunday I was on a bus, and heard something about the earthquake in the radio, but then forgot to check the news. Then it took some time to realize that one of my friends is supposed to be on a holiday in India or somewhere (he travels a lot, so don´t always remember where he is exactly going). Yesterday I began to worry, and sent him a text message. No answer. One friend tried to call, but it went straight to the answering-machine. These are terrible things even when there is no-one you know involved, but this of course added my sorrow, because I might lose a friend.
Hoping and praying that there will be no more deaths in South Asia, and especially praying that both Kurisuchiina and my friend are alive and well. Might call it selfish, but it is true that death becomes more horrible if some-one you know is in danger.

^ Yeah, it also seems alot more 'real', if you know what I mean.
A list of other organisations helping the cause for relief, can be found here.

I think I know what you mean, because I guess that´s what I meant. Maybe I´ll call the Foreign Ministry or whatever it is called, if I don´t hear about him until tomorrow... Might only be his cellphone is off, and he is already back home... I think they are very busy in the Ministry, don´t want to bother them for nothing. Besides, I don´t know if they are giving information to others than relatives.

They most likely wouldn't be. Surely there must be a phone line set up somewhere for people to call, if they think someone they know was caught up in the disaster.
I hope you get in contact with them!

My country was hit with the tsunami waves. Well, thankfully only a part of it was hit. Penang, a state in Malaysia and also an island, was hit badly. I think about 50 people died but I'm not too sure. Sri Lanka has by far, the biggest death toll among the countries that was hit by the tsunami waves. Even Somalia, which was probably a thousand kilometres away was hit.
A popular holiday destination in Thailand called Phuket was also hit. Thankfully, my friend who was on holiday came back safely. Everyone please... help these victims. believe me, I've seen the pictures and it ain't pretty at all. Or at least pray for their lost lives.

I´m glad you are ok even though your country was hit, Arista. Also good to hear your friend came back safely. This gives some hope. I´m now praying my friend hasn´t lost his life or health. Quote:

| That's so awful. My friend in Australia had this friend who was in Thailand at the time and she luckily was okay. That is so sad though about all of the people who didn't get evacuated. |

For those of you who know Nabiya, another SS member who lives in Malaysia, she has finally sent word that she is ok. She said that the beaches had some damage and that the death toll there is around 60 now.

This is a really sad thing that has happened. I will pray for those that are fortunate to have survived and for those who aren't as fortunate. I don't know many people that live in that part of the world, but I still hope that everyone will pull through.

I just want to pray for all the families who have lost someone or don't know where somebody is...I could never imagine what they are feeling. It was so sudden no one ever really saw it coming. Lastly I want to pray that all the houses and buildings deystroyed will be rebuild and that all survivers will be able to again lead a healthy happy life.

I think we all should use both the magic of words and the magic of thoughts here. And hope that everybody not yet dead survived. We cannot even imagine the agony in the south-east parts of Asia... Except those of us who live there, of course. Mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, cousins... Heard about a girl from Sri Lanka, who didn´t go to work (lives around here where I live) after the catastrophe. She must be busy trying to find out about her friends and relatives... I remember seeing her just a couple of weeks before. So happy, she almost danced. But now...
Life isn´t always fair, but we will have to try to accept that. "No-one here gets out alive", as some ancient thinker (Jim Morrison?) has said... Sad but true.
(Still hope, selfishly maybe, that my friend is still alive... He can swim, though... But did it help... And he had been talking also about Sri Lanka!)
edit: Sometimes you seem to have such ´big´ problems, then something like this happens and you realize your problems were like nothing. Praying and hoping for everybody concerned.

We just reported that the death toll has now been confirmed at over 120,000. This has been beyond all of our imaginations.
My prayers are with those who have suffered in this tragedy.
