The December issue of the French magazine One features an interview with Tom Felton.
He incarnates one of the most diabolical and unpleasant characters from Harry Potter. And he loves it! Tom Felton, a.k.a Draco Malfoy, is nevertheless an adorable young man. Far from getting a big head (ego) with the success of two Harry Potter premieres, Tom isn't even sure he wants to be an actor all his life...
Q: What can you tell us about "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"? For example, is it true there will not be a Quidditch match?
A: Don't count on me to tell you! [laughs] I know very well that Alfonso (Cuaron, the director) and the producers would kill me if i unveiled what will happen. I really don't have the right to say, I'm sorry...
Q: Can you at least tell us how your character will evolve in this film?
A: [laughs] No, I can't tell you that either! Alright, since youinsist, I'll give you one scoop on the film, but this will be the only one. In "The Prisoner of Azkaban", Malfoy has a new haircut. He doesn't have his hair plastered back with gel. It was the director's idea, and I can't say I don't like it. It gives me less time in makeup. [laughs]
Q: Is it true that you're a big amateur fisherman?
A: Yes, it's one of my passions. You may find it strange, but I prefer fishing almost to being on set. When i have a little free time I go with my brother to Old Bury Hill lake, near where I live, and we fish for hours. My specialty is carp fishing. My biggest haul was a fish of almost 15 kilos. In that lake it's very rare to find a fish that big. So you can see, fishing and me, it's one big love story. I'd love to make it my profession one day...
Q: You're ready to leave your acting career to become a fisherman?
A: Yes, it wouldn't bother me at all. For example, I'd really love to be fish keeper (?) or have my own store for fishing equipment. You know, being an actor my whole life was never my ambition. I'm doing it now because it's fun, but doing "Harry Potter" is enough for me. I'm not the type to go through dozens of auditions to get one role. Star status doesn't interest me either.
Q: So, if they ask, would you accept the part in the next four "Harry Potter"s?
A: Yes, of course. Without hesitation. I like the Malfoy character too much to let someone else take it.
Q: Did you read J.K. Rowling's books?
A: I'm ashamed to admit it, but no. Contrary to most film actors, I preferred not to read them becuase I thought it would influence my acting too much. I wanted to play the role of Malfoy as he was written in the scence and not in J.K.'s books.Maybe one day I'll read them. For now, I'm not too drwan to the reading.
Q: What is the reaction of "Harry Potter" fans when they meet you?
A: Inevitably, people have the impression that I'm as mean and nasty as Malfoy. The worst is the reac tion of little kids. When 5 or 6 year old fans see me they often start to cry. They're terrified becuase they think I'm really Malfoy. They don't make the distiction between the actor and the character. One time, Chris Columbus's kids ran away when they saw me! [laughs] These reactions make me a little angry, but at least it proves I was convincing in my role. That's gratifying enough.
Q: Out of all the "Harry Potter" scenes you've filmed up to the present, which is your favorite?
A: Without question, the dueling club scene in "Chamber of Secrets". Daniel and I, we really acted like nuts when filming that. In general, I love doing scenes with Daniel. You have to know he's a little devil on set. It always amuses him to play the worst jokes imaginable, like secretly taking out cell phones and changing the menu language to Russian or Turkish. Like, all the pressure is on his shoulders and he's the star of the film, so he often needs to unwind by playing jokes.
Q: Do you get a lot of mail?
A: Yes, a ton. Fans send me all sorts of presents. I also get a lot of love letters and even marriage proposals.
Q: Who are your favorite actors and actresses?
A: I adore Samuel L. Jackson. He's one of my biggest idols and Isystematically watch all his films. For women, my favorite is Angelina Jolie. I have a weakness for her...
