| | | The staying power of Potter fans The Seattle Times has an article about Potter fans and how they've grown since Harry Potter began back in 1997/1998. They point out that while some fans have 'moved on' others will always remain loyal to the fandom. Quote:
"I've moved on a little from 'Harry Potter,' " said Seattle resident Hunter Brown, 13, who has read each of the previous books about four times. "For some people, it's not cool to be a Harry Potter fan. You don't broadcast it, even if you like the books."
Quote:
"To me, there doesn't seem to be as much pent-up excitement among their friends as with the last one," said Wallingford resident Marilyn Nicolai, who is buying a copy each for her kids, Max, 13, and Ava, 11. "That marketing hype, they're not a part of it. They still really like the books, but for my kids, everything around it is off-putting."
Quote:
"I know a lot of younger kids seem really hyped about it," said eighth-grader Max Nicolai. "But the kids I know, not so much. I'm still a bit of a fan, but not as much as I was.
"I'll definitely read ['Half-Blood Prince'] and I think I'll enjoy it, but I'm not waiting in line for it or anything."
Quote:
"Harry's fans are loyal; the fans who started with him are still following his adventures," said Brenna Shanks, teen materials selector for the King County Library System. "That's not to say younger children don't read him, too. It's just that as the stakes grow higher and the body count climbs, teens are as likely to be fans as children."
Quote:
"Most of the students have already seen the movies, so many prefer just to watch [them]," said third-grade teacher Jaimy Sohn., who teaches at Sunny Hills Elementary School in Sammamish.
Quote:
Fans who are emotionally invested in the characters will continue to read the series regardless of their age, Shanks said.
"Kids who started with the first book and are now in college will still pick up the new one," she said. "They want to find out what happens."

brilliant - it's what we've all been thinking, about time it was released to the press! lol!
i will never grow out of it, as there is nothing to grow out of. Every true hp fan knows that this series is not just one for kids, but for all ages.
True fans will always stay with hp.

I can never grow out of HP! And seriously, you can't actually compare the books to the movies now can you? As good as the actors and direction can be, the movies can never actually capture that brilliant magic which JK puts in every sentence she writes. Besides, the movies can't have every single thing the book will have in more detail(something which I've been telling my brothers for years )

exactly - that's what i keep telling my friends. However, most of them just watch the movies as they can't stand reading, and think i'm just having a go at them!
the movies are brilliant, but the books are unique.

That's my one fear about the films. They create laziness. I can't count how many times people have said to me, "What's the point in reading the books when the film will be out in a couple of years time?". Ugh.
I can safely say that I'll read book 7, even though by that time I may have finished University. Once a fan, always a fan.

Thats like some people i know, but they just dont want to read the book, because then when they watch the movie it wont be as good as the book. Quote:

When you start reading the books from when they first came out and grow up with them you tend to be more loyal to Potter, and have more of an involvement in it, rather than if you just get into the hype four books in, but there are still loyal fans who do the latter.

I agree 100%. I will always love HP, even when I'm old and gray. I will still attend a midnight party for book 7 even though I will most likely be in or finished Uni. As was said above, to a true fan, age does not count. It's about time people caught that.

The better option in that case is to read and avoid the films. But a lot of people don't read them out of sheer laziness.
I think if you become, as the woman said, 'emotionally invested' from a young age, then it'd take a lot for you to let it go. The longer you're involved with something, the more attached you become.

Don't worry, I didn't get offended by your comment or anything. HP will live forever through our hearts and that's what matters the most.(Hehe, maybe that's how Dumbledore's been alive for so long. So many people keep him in their hearts that he's still alive )

Yes, but don't forget the ones who started reading HP as adults, I was 19 when I bought my first HP book (OotP) Quote:

Here's one for the "Harry Potter Closet Case" thread. Ugh, I never cared about being cool when I was 13, never really have actually. *pokes those so concerned about being cool they forget themselves Quote:

Posers. I hate to think on what kind of worlds they're missing out on cos of television and movies. Hey, suggest to your parents that "some people" are relying way too heavily on movies and television for entertainment, insist on a month of neither, of course this could come back to bite ya in the butt, (ie, no comp, missing your fave shows, no video games, etc) but (no pun intended) at least they'd be forced to try something else. Must be a british paper. It's always confusing, I'm in college, but its the same as Englands University. Hmph, over here University means "Same education, higher price"
I started reading HP in college, so it's not just continuing, it's people who want to read for fun, and not because the profs tell you to. It's people who go "this looks interesting" or "let's see how far off the movie was this time." or, like me; "Wow! Free hat with purchase of OotP?? Here's 20, gimme my hat..........hmmm, wonder what this ones about *opens to read* Sweet!" *goes out to buy other 4 books, bullies b/f to buy 5 book boxed set for Christmas prezzie*
HP rocks, it always will [/rambling]

This is true! And about a lot of teens rather watch the films than read the books I got to say that it is completly true! Most of my classmates watched the films but didn't read the book!

It's funny to see most of the people qouted there younger then me and I'm 15. But, even though HP is like a crime to read in my school. That you need to be a geek or something to read it. I am not no geek and will never be. But, all my friends know I love HP. My family thinks I'm crazy for having such an obsession. But, since HP came out, I've been a loyal fan and will never stop being a loyal fan. I enjoy the books much better then the movies. And it gets on my nerves when people much rather watch the movies. Theres things in the movies that they are missing about the whole plot......

VERY true !!!!
ppl like us who wanna know how harry and his friends do in the 6th year are ofcourse emotionally invested ...its not unusual that most ppl are not that psyched abt the new potter book cuz theyve grown up or rather grown apart from the books, but still the staying power of potter fans( the real ones ,...hahaha) is still there....very much!
