| | | The Potter effect on the environment PR Web has a press release estimating that more than 300,000 trees were needed to print all the copies of ' Half-Blood Prince' that were sold within 24 hours of the release.
Dang Good Dog! Publishing suggests that publishing books in e-book format is more environmentally friendly and can save publishers and consumers money. Quote:
“It’s not just the printing of the books, but also the packaging, the energy used, and the fossil fuels burned in transporting the books to their destinations,” says Lawrence Nault, one of the authors who have chosen to work with Dang Good Dog! Publishing.
Quote:
“Sure, many people choose to print off e-books at home rather then read them on their computer screen,” says Nault when ask about the impact of use of home printers instead of reading on the screen. “E-books still come out ahead because that paper can easily be recycled. Traditionally bound books with their coated covers and glued bindings are difficult to recycle.”

Well I mean isn't there a law that for every tree you cut down, you have to plant a new one? But then again trees do take quite a long time to grow. That does seem like a lot of trees to cut down. I think the idea to make the font smaller was a good idea. That way you're fitting more on one page.

I know I should say that's terrible about the trees, because it is, but I don't want an e-book, I want a real one and on the day it is published. Call me selfish, I just do.

another problem with ebooks is that its bad for your eyes to stare at the screen reading. and if u print it out think of all that paper and ink!!!! also ebooks could easily be downloaded
personally i feel ebooks is NOT the way too move forward.

But, as they pointed out, printed e-books are far easier to recycle.

| I find that eBooks are good if you're at work and want to read it and can't visibly show a gigantic book and make it obvious you're not doing work, or if you're too lazy to get up off the seat and get it, but I'd still prefer a real book. If everyone decided to release every book as an eBook instead, the people who don't own computers will be disadvantaged. It's cheaper to buy a book than buy a computer.
Aren't the HP books already recycled paper or not? If not, why don't they use recycled paper? And I must mention, don't bleach the paper to make it white either. It makes recycled paper worse. I wouldn't mind if my HP book had specks of coloured paper in it. I wouldn't mind if any piece of paper had specks of coloured paper in it. Then it's obvious that it's recycled and less trees were harmed.
Hmmm...

Hogwarts RPG Name: Fiona Renée Oliveraux | My best friend got the ebook, because, let's face it, if you're on the computer all the time anyway, its more practical (and cheaper) to get an ebook.
I myself, however, like to see all the books lined up together on my shelf, so an ebook would never do.

I don't like the trees being cut down and all but I couldn't read an ebook!!
Maybe if everyperson who buys a HP book should try to plant a tree. Then we would be making a differance and helping Jo with the books. The press can't complain if the readers are trying to do something about it.

The British and Canadian ones are. The American versions however are not.

I myself, however, like to see all the books lined up together on my shelf, so an ebook would never do. i agree, i like to have books on my shelf at all times, if every book were an e-book, i wouldn't get that, unless i printed them all out myself, somehow stapled or binded them all together, but that costs alot of money too, you have to buy ink and paper, and it takes longer to do it yourself. I also agree that if you dont have a computer, you would be missing out and would have to go to the public library or run to a friends house just to read it, its a waste of time, i think.
then again, if you were at work, like somone has mentioned below, you could use an e-book and that would be a perfect reason to get an e-book, or if your on the computer all the time anyway...
i guess whatever suits you works, e-book, or book. I think the books should be published on already recycled paper, if they're not already, i'll have to check. I personally think they should continue to provide both, not everyone has a computer, or has the time to read a book on the computer or even print it out themselves for that matter, and not everyone has time to lounge around and read on their beds.
i guess if they don't already use recycled paper they should, maybe it would give people a whole new outlook on recycling and helping the environment, you know, "Harry Potter recycles, i can too!" ( i can just imagine one of my brothers or sisters saying that....) i guess it would give a new perspective on the subject. wow, you guys post fast, ok, then the american books should be printed in recycled paper...

Well i feel bad about the trees and all and i wish that we didn't need to cut so many of them down for verious reasons all the time... but it is nice to have a book in your hands and on your book shelf... i mean not everyone has a laptop/notebook computer to take with them where ever they go to read it on e book file or 100$ for paper and ink to print it out at home (thats about how much it would cost me because i have a dell computer and printer and black ink costs about 40 to 50$ and i only get about 400 pages out of it.)
but i think some people could get the book in audio cd or cassette tape.
hmm i thought JKR didn't allow the books to be in E book format... did she???
well anyway
carry on then.

Don't feel guilty.. there even more trees cut down for other books... *rolls eyes*
And I bet ALL the wood was from an endangered species from the rainforest..just kidding... lol Purrrlease.. they are trees.. that people probably grow acres upon acres just for this reason of making paper for things.. And it can be recycled paper. There so much more horrible things out in this world (poverty, starvation of countries) That we need to focus on.. not how many trees were used to make some books.. lol Seriously *Rolls eyes once more* I know.. I sound harsh and mean. Its like how some cows are made for burgers.. some trees are made for books...

Its bad when trees get cut down like this.....but, their making a big deal over Harry Potter, when everyday more trees probably are being used for everything else we need and just Harry Potter isnt using up fossil fuels. Everday somebody drives a car many miles, burning up many fossil fuels along the way.
