Post The Potter effect on children

The Scotsman has run an article about recent research conducted by The Federation of Children's Book Groups, which found that J.K.Rowling's books have had a positive effect on children and literacy.

Quote:
Almost six out of 10 children (59%) think the books have helped them improve their reading skills. And 48% say Rowling's creation is the reason they read more.

84% of teachers say Harry Potter has helped improve child literacy and 67% claimed the series has turned non-readers into readers.
Quote:
Colin Harrison, professor of literacy studies at the University of Nottingham, who contributed to the research, said: "The sheer pervasiveness of JK Rowling's books means Harry Potter will certainly have impacted on children's literacy levels.

"Reading and re-reading books is very valuable in building fluency, and there is a strong link between reading books for pleasure and improvement in word recognition and comprehension."
Quote:
Reading a Harry Potter book stretches a child's ability. More than half (51%) of the 1,000 children surveyed thought the books were tough to read but worth sticking with.

Teachers also think Rowling's clever writing and plot development are a challenge to youngsters, with 73% claiming to be surprised that children manage to read the books at all.
Quote:
Alison Lewis, who teaches English to pupils aged 11 to 17 at the Wester Hailes Education Centre in Edinburgh, said: "There has been a lot of excitement in the last few weeks of term about the new Harry Potter book. They are fascinated by what is going to happen next. The characters in the books appeal to girls while the boys seem more interested in the storyline. The most important thing is that it gets them interested in reading."
The rest of the article can be read here.

^agreed. I don't watch much tv anymore. And I've read the books so many times now I've lost count. There are so many books that you can only read once. But Harry Potter can be read over and over again, and not get boring.
And Ottery, you're a dork. But you're my dork, so it's ok! *grins* And stop being so evil to your Aunt! I'll sic Teddy on you...
I believe that HP does promote growth in children mentally, because the books are so interesting and in-depth. As you get older, you start seeing different and more meanings in so many areas that JK has written in the books. To children, some things may seem like fun and entertaining, but us older "Children" (I refuse to call myself an adult. I will always be a child. Like Peter Pan!) see the significance of whatever it is being there. I love that about JK's work. She's so amazingly talented. I wish she'd share some of that talent with me!

"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."

That is great that it helps people's reading abilities. I always think it's so strange when some parents claim that it is teaching children witchcraft and that it is a bad thing like some parents like to think that it is. I don't believe that. I think Harry Potter is one of those series that is especially great cause every age can read it and enjoy it.

Same here! I've been studying English all my life, but reading the Harry Potter books not only provided me with a huge portal to let my imagination forth, but also with the possibility to express my views and ideas with other fans online, which helps deeply, besides being so much fun.

I think the Harry Potter books have let me discover the world of reading. Before I read the books I never used to read many books and watching tv was my most favourite thing I would do in my time. What could I say I was 10. But after reading the books it showed me that there is more to books that just words and that many books have deep meaning to them. You use your intellect and imagination with books something that you dont get when you watch television as the picture is right there in front of you. I think that the Harry Potter books have made me more intellegent in some ways. For one thing I hate taking shortcuts in my grammer and I hate slang, and that makes the people I know think that I am a bit of a posh nosh when I really am not. Another thing is that it has helped me into reading other books since Harry Potter helped me to learn that there is more to books than just words. And I hardly watch tv at all now (except for the Simpsons).

These books are totally evil. Why? Cause they drive me crazy from waiting for the next book. Also it has ruined my social life, instead of hanging out at the mall saying mindless things about other peoples images I stay at home and read! How am I to become a superficial prat if I'm always busy reading something. They need to develop a Potter Patch for me cause I am addicted.

I got hooked after my sister (hebe) was talking 24/7 about the things that happened in the books.. I read the 5th book first and and then was hooked. I read all of the books atleast 4 times each.. and shall read them again before cracking open HBP.. ok.. so I have a week.

And because of Harry Potter I have strayed from my historical non fiction books and into the world of fantasy and such.. its so much more fun.

Reading is good.

The Sweetest Thing Lissy De Vil

I think the books are great for kids. I have a set for my 2y/o daughter when she is old enough. She already loves Harry anyway, as she watches the movies now. She knows the music and can recognize Harry and Draco immediately. She loves 'em, tries to kiss the TV when they are on ( they have that effect on a lot of people). Anyway, my point is that I will read the books to my kid and she will read them herself one day.
