| | | The importance of fanfiction
Scotland's The Herald recently ran an article about Harry Potter fanfiction and what effect it has on the fandom.
Please note that the article is above PG rating and so I've carefully selected quotes -- read the full thing at your own discretion. Quote:
The difference between the author of the above and other Potter fans is that his appreciation doesn't end when the books do. Instead, he writes new stories using the characters, locations and plots in the Potter books and posts them on the internet to be reviewed by other writers of so-called fan fiction.
Quote:
"When writing fan fiction you add your ideas to an existing world," he says of his hobby, which has taken off since Harry Potter arrived on the literary scene.
"You can use existing characters and places, or make up your own. The only thing you really have to look out for is to stay within the 'rules'. If there is evidence in a book of something not being possible, it's generally a good idea not to do it.
"For example, in J K Rowling's series I believe Professor Dumbledore says that you cannot bring back the dead, so you probably shouldn't write a story about a Dark Wizard studying necromancy. That said, Dumbledore could be wrong, and writing about the study of bringing back the dead could be a good writing experience."
Quote:
Not all writers of fan fiction – or fics – adhere to the facts set out in the books that inspired them, however, and many take pleasure in changing much-loved characters, splitting up perfect matches and killing off heroes and heroines. So it is that Hermione moans about PMT, Lyra and Will of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials make rather explicitly-described love under a tree and Alice from Wonderland becomes a rock star.
Quote:
Mara Millman has been writing fics since she was 16 years old. Now 34, she gives advice and edits the work of younger writers. "As a mother and ex-teacher, it's wonderful to see these kids writing, even if it's fan fiction," says Millman, a published author who is from Kent but lives in south Florida. "Harry Potter got kids interested and a lot of the kids writing fan fiction now want to delve into original work, which is even more wonderful. I try to help out. I've put up lots of links about spelling, punctuation, grammar, everything. It's very important."
Millman is a fan fiction veteran, having written more than 200 chaptered fics on Harry Potter, and sees real hope. "Some of the kids out there today write better than I did back then," she says. "The problem with fan fiction is it's a disclaimer-based situation, so it's never going to be published because that would be infringing copyright. But online I definitely see it growing. Years after Harry Potter is off the shelf, it'll still be going on."

Interesting article. It's good to see it being taken seriously as a promoter of writing and imagination.
I'm often completely stumped as to where some of the ides come from, especially some of those mentioned in that article.

Cool! I adore fan-fic!! I have met many great friends online who wrote fan-fic! It's great because it really does inspire writing! I myself starting writing fan-fic a few years back for another obsession I have and it's so much fun!! Keep fan-fic alive!!!

That's great! I love reading FFs, and I've written about a dozen beginnings to my stories, but have never finished them. I really should finish them. I wrote a HP FF in the third grade-before I even knew what FF was. It was hilarious when I found it 3 years later, my writing was terrible back then.

| In Love with Touz | | Lil Mikky-Mu That's a great article. I was pretty prejudiced against fanfics, myself , but HP was the first book(s) that actually got me thinking beyond the books and into my imagination at what could happen. To see how far I've redeemed myself see my siggy . It's now a therapeutic, stress-relieving part of my life and it just gets me writing - as skill that's as important to have in my life as drawing, dancing, or playing music. It's an excuse to be creative.

I think it'd be cool if they made a book full of the best Harry Potter fan-fics of all time. And if it was approved by JK Rowling or something happened to the copyright to make it published...

Wow 34 and still in love with fics! That's so great of her! You go girl. And, I dunno how long fics have been popular but I just started reading fics since Harry Potter. I think Harry Potter was the ultimate beginner to fics, even though they were there already.
Another thing is when authors invent too many characters. You know? Like when they have a fic based the HP world but with 6 or more extra characters, which happens mostly when reading Past Hogwarts (since we don't know much about the Sirius times) and Future Hogwarts.
As long as there are less than 4 extra characters it's ok.
Love Morgan xxx

that's a cool article! i too adore fanfic and i've breen writing myself for a while now. i agree with morgan, in a fanfic there shouldn't be many new characters, since the ones we already have, are so wonderful.
