| | | 'The Herald' hates Harry Potter
There’s a long article trashing Harry Potter (books and films) in The Herald. Here’s an excerpt. Quote:
… one does have to question whether J K Rowling is now being hijacked into territories which she never intended to visit. In that sense it is interesting that both the author and the young actor, Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry in the (largely lamentable) films, have expressed sincere relief at the end of the saga. Is it too presumptious to suggest that everyone creative connected with Harry has been imprisoned for too long in an immense money-making machine; one which has came close to crushing the original joy of an adequate story? I don't think so.
The rest of the article is full of errors, just like the paragraph above which states that Jo and Dan have said they’re relieved that the end is near.
You can read the entire article here. Be sure to read the comments below it left for the envious writer (and her sour grapes).

Harry Potter is one of the greatest literary creations of our time. The films are masterpieces as well. Nothing anyone says can change my mind about J.K. Rowling. <3 |

I'm suprised the journalist has actually plucked up the courage to right the article! I was so angry at this I wrote my own comment myself and yes most of the comments are not supporting her.

what a stupid bit of nonsense!!!! and thats not all that I have to say about this piece of trash in "the herald" and the lady who wrote it...but the SS rules forbid me from using the kind of language I would dearly love to employ when I read things like this......

They are forgetting the hugely possitive aspects of the Potter books which is that reading has become "cool" in the eyes of juniors and teenagers! That is something which I never came across when I was at school! They are off their rockers!

I think she is... an idiot for want of a better word.
I posted my own comment by A by the way
WHY write something that would so OBVIOUSLY get millions of people to hate you?? WHY? Maybe she just wants to be hated or maybe it was just a clever ruse?

This is my comment that I posted:
Ooooh dear... I can't understand why so many people need to be reminded that the books are written, classified, and read as [bold]fiction[/bold].
J. k. Rowling came from nothing, she works hard on these books, and she deserves every bit of the fortune that has come out of the series.
I was very young old when I first read the first book and, as a seventeen-year-old, I must say that anything that made me read with such a passon is great.
I used to look at 400 page books and want to pass out rather then read them. Especially if they were assigned for me to read by my teacher... But now that I have read the Harry Potter books, not only do I read everything in sight, non fiction and fiction, but I also have quite a passion for writing.
Ms. Reidy, you obviously don't remember what it's like to be a child who is bossed around when it comes to reading; it makes you feel incompetent and makes you hate reading. The random pick of a book, then the "here, read and reflect on this book" method doesn't work, it never has.
However, the Harry Potter series has given kids like me a lust for knowledge. Did you understand that? A seventeen-year-old [italic]wants[/italic] to read/learn. The Harry Potter books introdused me to lots of Latin, and many other things. Ms. Rowling loves to insert little nuggets of fact in her books, and those nuggets make me want to look up things in history books.
So, I implore you to please not knock the books until you understand fully the impact that they have had on those who needed those books to say "Hey, reading doesn't have to be the bane of your existence! It can be an actual recreation! A pleasure!"
Thank you for posing your opinion, Ms. Reidy, but I really think that you stepped over a line here.
~L.E.

Adults and children loved it long before it was a "money-making colossus." Why would that have changed? As for Harry Potter being a topic of peer-pressure and a "cult," I would have to disagree. For quite a few years now I've been teased for loving Harry Potter so much. There's friendly teasing from my friends and family, which I don't mind and join in with on most occasions. But I also went through a lot of harsh, degrading teasing when I was at school, from classmates who were "cool" and "popular." Sometimes I'd get rubbish from workmates at my afterschool job ... but did that stop me loving it and advertising that I love it? No! I continued to use my Harry Potter pencil case at school, I continued to take my Harry Potter bag to work ... people everntually got sick of it and left me alone. I know of a lot of other people who were the same, so if this woman truly believes what she's written, she obviously does not know how things work in the real world. The people who rubbish you over something like this clearly have not read, or do not understand, exactly how wonderful it is. They're too worried about their appearance and social status to realise what they're missing out on. That, or they're too afraid to admit they can't read. I love Harry Potter and I'm not, and never will be, afraid to admit it.

I posted my own little comment to her also and here it is.

First of all I must say that I found your article insulting. I am one of those Adult Female American readers that you so cruelly describe as Infantile . I am 27 years old, and was just introduced to The Magical World of Harry Potter 2 years ago, oh and I should mention that I have always loved to read and been known as a bookworm. I also had been reading Stephen King for several years and I'm not Infantile . Prior to actually reading the Harry Potter books and seeing the movies, I agreed with you on most levels. But since that time, I met my husband and he shared his love of the books with me, I did not "Follow the crowd" as you so eloquently put it. I have read all the books repeatedly and love them. My request to you is to please keep your mouth shut about things that you do not understand. Girl you have opened one big can of worms on yourself. And dearest editor, may I congratulate you and your proofreading staff for being completely thick and allowing insulting, and unresearched drivle like this article to make it to your press.

It seems to me that the writer could have used her time, the readers time, and the papers time to write an article that focuse on something positive. These people that write these articles bashing the Potter books and movies really have nothing else to do. What a waste of time reading that, I think mabey someone was a little jeoulse that J.K. is a much better writer.
