| | | The Great Harry Potter Price War The Evening Standard reports that the Harry Potter price war is officially on. Despite the fact that the recommended retail price for 'Half-Blood Prince' is £16.99, some distributors are selling it for as little as under £10 in a bid to sell more copies. Quote:
'We anticipate it will be bigger than the last Harry Potter book. Ottakar's, Asda, Waterstones, Borders, Books etc, Foyles and Hatchards are still considering their positions - and watching each other.'
Asda won the price war when ' Order of the Phoenix' was released. They sold the fifth novel for £8.96. A spokesman said that it is determined to beat all rivals again.

$16 is about just over £8 so you got it roughly for the same price! LOL I got mine from Asda in 2003 so it was the cheapest avaliable anywhere.

I paid full price for all my books... but wow, I didn't know they were allowed to do that. I always thought that sort of thing was regulated. Oh well, not like I'm gonna complain about it, maybe I can get a cheaper book this time. | |

I paid $29.95 for my copy! If I pre-ordered it, it would have been $39.95.

I bought OotP in Borders and paid $16 too, they always have new releases on sale with like 30 and 40% off, just they are going to do with HBP

I don't see how they can make a porfit selling the book that cheap! Borders is already selling it at 40%off the cover price. Granted if you sell a product for less you will sell more but there is a line to where you would make no money at all or a very small margin.

I didn't know they could do that! They aren't making a profit though, if they buys the books $30 apiece, and sell them for $10 or under, they won't come out on top. Maybe just for the amount of books, not the revenue made.
I got GoF and OotP both for $18, I pre-ordered both. GoF at Chapter Eleven and OotP at Barnes&Noble, they were originally $30.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ottery St. Catchpole Third Year | Ottery's Economics Lesson or why capitalism really is evil... Paris & Kellybear r luv :Read Otty 's fics:Gone With the Wind:I♥Rupert Scholastic will be making a very big profit kiddies...watch here's how...*Uncle Otty cranks the numbers* 10 million copies times ten dollars would be? *Assuming each book is sold to the bookstore for that much it could be up to 14* 10,000,000 ten million dollars no? The cost of paper drops the more you buy, which Scholastic will buy lots of (consequently killing our forests) so it doesn't cost as much to make each book that's why the large print run. Same with the ink. Publishers do not publish books if they lose money. They would be out of business. And after the sales are over the book still costs 30 smackers...which means even more profit... That's not even going into how they spread out the cost...yup. B&N can sell their books cheaper if you buy lots of books, not just HP...they want you in their store... *Ottery will be there yawning at midnight along with everyone else...but he wont feel bad for Scholastic*

I bought books 3 and 4 for less than $10 each ($5 and $8 respectively, I think) and the 1st 2 books were given to me by a friend as a birthday present. The going rate for OotP was $29.95 at bookstores, but I bought mine for $19.95 at a nearby Target. I preordered HBP at Amazon.com and paid $17.99, WITH free shipping. So that's about it. Can't complain! (Hey, paperback set of first 5 books are selling for about $27 on Amazon.com)
