| | | Terry Pratchett talks about J.K.Rowling
In a recent interview with The Age, best-selling fantasy author Terry Pratchett talks about fellow writer J.K. Rowling. Quote:
For the few people who don't know, Terry Pratchett, 56, is the multi-million-selling author of the Discworld series of books that, if it weren't for J.K. Rowling (more of her later) would be the world's biggest selling fantasy books.
Quote:
The British public begs to differ. About a year ago, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings was voted Britain's favourite novel in an extensive BBC viewers' poll called The Big Read. (It also won the recent German equivalent.) J.K. Rowling was fifth, with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Quote:
This comes in handy when discussing J.K. Rowling. Pratchett is among Harry Potter's lesser victims. Before the boy wizard came along, Pratchett and his motley crew from Discworld were the kings of the fantasy heap. Now they are merely No.2 , surpassed in a Quidditch-esque rush of books by the tens of million and blockbuster movies. Rowling is worth an estimated £435 million ($A1.1 billion), probably about 10 times more than Pratchett.
Quote:
Is J.K. Rowling a good writer?
He hesitates. "I've never actually been asked that question." With a marked change in vocal tone, he says: "I think of her as a good and competent writer, a phrase that I would apply to myself as well."
A very diplomatic answer. "I am being political simply because I'm painfully aware that not you, but plenty of people would love, 'Pratchett slams Rowling' as a headline. I've given what I consider a true answer.
"Easing on to a slightly easier facet of that situation is, people say, 'aren't you jealous of J.K. Rowling?' to which my reply is, 'I never dreamed I'd make any kind of money out of writing fantasy because not many people do. I never dreamt I'd become a millionaire out of writing fantasy.'
Quote:
"There are better writers than me and J.K. Rowling who aren't particularly financially successful."
Pratchett has yet to follow Rowling into Hollywood and, despite earlier reports that the makers of Shrek were planning to produce a film based on his Bromeliad trilogy, he seems a reluctant starter for celluloid fame. "With movies you lose lots of control over characters. They are my characters, really."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ottery St. Catchpole Third Year | Truth be told! Paris & Kellybear r luv :Read Otty 's fics:Gone With the Wind:I♥Rupert ^^ Beats sounding like Stephen King, his reviews always sound like he's trying to kiss her ***. And he's not even subtle about it. They're in the front page of the American paperback editions of the 4th and 5th book. I would have preferred a straight answer, "I hate that evil..." or just an outright refusal to answer. Competent, I love her stuff, I've never read his but I'm going to, because being a right dork doesn't necessarily make you a bad writer.

I'm feeling a bit pathetic right now. I work at a library, and not only have I never heard of Terry Pratchett... I've never even heard of Discworld.
He came off sounding a bit condescending in the interview... he could have shown more respect to JKR. Only "competent." *scoff*

never really got in on disc world because apparantly i readthem in the wrong order. I am a complete obsessive about HP and Anne Rice's Vamp chronicles, both of which i read in the wrong order. Series, imo, should be interchangable order wise. fair enough they are much better sequentially[bigger pool of info] but they should be good as individual books also.
Having said that tho, Terry Prachett did a fabulous[sp?] job with Good Omens, co-written by Neil Gaimen.
He came across sorta bitter I thought^^^, like he wanted to slate her but couldn't cause the world was watching type thing.

Well don't, that's most likely why he replied the way he did, he's probably been writing for years, and here comes JK and becomes an overnight success. I guess I would be bitter too, if I wasn't busy being happy for her, and myself, I get to read her books woohooo!

I absolutely love Terry Pratchett discworld novels, he's a genius! He writes for children and adults and his characters are amazing! He takes world events from this world and weaves them in a very funny and sometimes dark way into the world he has invented. I don't think he has anything against JK, whatever he said it would probably be misconstrued, the papers always love it when famous people hate each other!

I've never heard of him but it sounds like he's doubting JK's greatness as a writer. Some critics still see her as a "toast of the moment" writer, not really a great, classic one in the same league as Tolkien.

J.K. Rowling really isn't that good. Prachett is a much more experienced and original fantasy lover with a good respect for his chosen genre. I don't blame him for sounding like he did.
But can you really compare the two? One has a stereotypical good vs. bad + growing-up theme while teh Discworld series is completely bizarre and ultimately witty. They're just plain different. Maybe they're worth the same, but they're just different- like chocolate and chips. Both good but different.

Stumbled across this thread from a google search. I know it's ages old but I had to comment.
I don't think Pratchett sounds bitter at all, just tactful. Who says he has to like JKR? If he doesn't like her writing it's his right, and was downright nice of him to be tactful about saying it.
As for how good Pratchett is, he's been around for years, he's terribly successful, and if he decides to turn his nose up at Rowling he's got every right as a respected author. His fan base is decidedly older so it's not odd that most Potter fans haven't heard of him.
I love JKR's books but I'd have to rate Pratchett as much higher on my respect scale for excellent writing and masterful use of the English language.
