Post Terry Pratchett clarifies Rowling remarks

Terry Pratchett has gone on record to clarify remarks he made in a letter to the Sunday Times a few days ago. He states he was expressing annoyance at journalists rather than Rowling.

Quote:
Here's the worlds best-selling fantasy writer who has just said she hadn't thought she was writing fantasy and also that she doesn't really like the stuff.

She goes on to say that she didn't finish TLOTR or the Narnia series and has issues with Lewis. No problem there, but all this revelatory stuff just floated past, apparently unexamined.

I'd like to know how an author can write in a genre she doesn't like -- really. I'd like to know what she thinks she *is* writing.

That's exactly what it is! How can someone think that all fantasy apart from Harry Potter is absolutle drivel?
Seriously, Pratchett had nothing to clarify, I understood him perfectly....
And why is noone giving out about that Time writer? Show me one person who reads that article and comes away without an urge to kill him. It was unbelievable! After reading it, I had to hold back from writing a much ruder letter than Pratchett's to some newspaper!

I hate people! It's not his buisness whether or not she LIKES the genre she writes in, as long as she writes it well. ARR.

He wasn't really bothered by that. It was the interviewer's implication that pre-1997, fantasy was nonsense that nobody could relate to.

Ditto. What's with this guy and bad-mouthing Jo? I think someone's jealous.

I'm stuck on what to say because I read a lot of Pratchett stuff before I read the Rowling stuff. I really like his stuff. I thought it was really quite funny. It's not fair if he's being accused of slating her, if he doesn't intend for it to come out that way. He's just phrasing things wrong a bit and that is possibly why it looks like he's slating her. I think the Pratchett stuff is good if you want to read something that will really make you laugh and the Rowling stuff is something you'd read to really make you think and get into the story line and stuff like that. She is writing fantasy though and in writing it, she has to read it over. Yes, she probably has people who proof read her work for her before it gets sent for publishing, but she will have to read it herself as she is working on it or it would make no sense at all at final print. I love Rowling stuff, but I also quite like the Pratchett stuff. I know now I'm probably going to get slated for sticking up for Pratchett, but everyone has an opinion.
