Terry Pratchett has criticised Jo Rowling saying she is being elevated "at the expense of other writers". On today, of all days. Do I hear someone crying for publicity? Probably.

Pratchett, whose first fantasy novel was published 34 years ago, wrote to the Sunday Times saying the genre had always been "edgy and inventive".

"Ever since The Lord of the Rings revitalised the genre, writers have played with it, reinvented it, subverted it and bent it to their times," he wrote.

If you ask me, it just makes him look like a bad guy....even if you don't like the books, that's no reason to critcize them or the author!! (Of course.....who wouldn't like them?)

Are you just going to ignore everything Terry Pratchett has to say and blindly defend Rowling for no good reason? He has a point, though his letter was a tad rude, he was defending the genre he has been writing in for 34 years and he was defending the great writers of the genre (including C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien). If you read the origonal interview with Rowling you'll fing she (yes the apparently infallible writer of the HP series) was rather rude about addressing these great writers. The HP books are good and enjoyable, but they do not come close to the genius of Lewis or Tolkien. Please if you are one of these morons who only read and reread the HP books b/c you are ignorant and half-retarded please try other writers in the cursed fantasy genre, if you have any working brain cells you may find a writer who (god forbid) is better than your J.K. Rowling.

You see an interview, you read the interview, you judge on the interview while you don't even know what he is saying.

I want you guys to go to the original "The Times" website and check out that original interview.
You know why my dear friend wrote this letter?
I'll tell you why...
For year and years and years there were fantasy writers frolliking about writing their fantasy novels. But then a writer stood up and wanted to be a better writer. Wich is fair BUT what she did, maybe on purpose maybe not, was block out all the other writers that wrote many greater books than harry potter. of course the media is most to blame for this. and thats what terry's ****** off about.

And come on what kind of a remark is: Ow i never really knew it was fantasy until i finished it.
I mean what the hell???
Terry had all the right to make a statement like that no bleedin rudeness in that.

So please PLEASE PLEEEAASSEEE. stop your bloody snickering about ooww that big baddy terry pratchett insultet our queen we must defend her by posting angry things about him on this forum.

you people must learn that books are books. people are people. and you got your dumb people and your bright people. and you people that didn't understand what Teryy was saying are pretty much just dumb people.

And if you ignore this post it means that you know that I am right, but you just don't want to admit it.

Well, Pratchett actually is a fantastic author. I've read a few of his books, and they're marvelous.

Also, he probably didn't make the comments on her birthday.

Anyway, some of you are being foolish about this. J.K. is just ONE writer, and not the best, though her books ARE good.

Look at it this way- Pratchett is a candle, Rowling is a firework. Fireworks are darned pretty and impressive, lots of people see them and they creative a huge impression- for a moment. Then they're gone. Candles last longer, and serve a different purpose- to shed light on this world (Pratchett is a SATIRIST, and uses a fantasy world to poke fun at the real world). Rowling is amazing and has created a huge buzz in a short amount of time, whereas Pratchett is well on his way to being ranked alongside the very great fantasy writers, if he is not there already. He has written well over 30 books which, IN THE UK, are astonishingly popular, but in that candle sort of way.

Pratchett does not need publicity. He has inspired me previously because he is a man who writes purely for the enjoyment of it. I've no doubt Rowling wouldn't have written Potter if not for the same reason. It's just their series have taken off in completely different ways.

^ I agree totally. I'm a Harry Potter fan too, but ask me who my three favorite writers are and I'll tell you Terry Pratchett, Oscar Wilde and Han Suyin. He doesn't need a cry for publicity, he already has it! He's been writing for thirty years and he's a great! I adore his books and am doing my best to get all of them - his books aren't only entertainment, they're wise - but they never preach. His characters are never stereotyped and his battles for good and evil are blurred, even though his characters know perfectly well where they stand and stand they do. You might not agree with them, but you love them, and there's no 'if you don't agree with me, then you're wrong'.

I think that Terry Pratchett is a better writer than JK Rowling, just like I think JKR is a better writer than Ann M. Martin.

Impeach me for that if you will.

oh shut up. you all are just over reacting. TP is way better that JK. he uses his wit and bloody funnyness. he's just not as well known, or as much in the spotlight because he only has a few childrens books, people tend to publisise books that appeal to all ages more than those which are just for one.
Who talks about the hungery caterpillar anymore? it had its limelight, so has a lot of TPs books. believe it or not, HP will eventualy just be remembered as the craze that took up the noughties
