| | | Terry Gilliam talks Potter Terry Gilliam is interviewed in the September 2005 issue of Entertainment Weekly. The interviewer mentions that Rowling wanted Gilliam involved in the Potter films. The following is his response:
"I was reading the script as I was flying to Los Angeles for the [Warner Bros] meeting and thought, "Oh, she's seen Time Bandits, she's seen Monty Python." You know you're not going to get the job. It's just to keep her happy - due diligence.
The terrible thing about it was during the course of the meeting, I started getting enthusiastic - I was even getting myself excited. I remember leaving the meeting, getting in my car and driving for about two hours along Mulholland Drive just so angry I'd allowed myself to get excited about it.
I mean, Chris Columbus' versions are terrible. Just dull. Pedestrian. But I thought Alfonso Cuaron did a great job with the last one. I thought, Yeah, you got really close to it."

I prefer Alfonso's version. There was more feeling in that film. CoS dragged IMO. I think it's awful how Terry *knew* he was just at that meeting for the sake of being there; he knew they weren't going to give him the job.

I really like the first two Harry Potter movies. I have to disagree with the guy there. I mean I thought that Christopher Columbus caught the right mood with the movies considering how old all the characters were and the amount of action in them. However everyone is intitled to their own opinion and I can respect his.

Well, he does all sorts, but I assume either writing or directing.

It would have been SO COOL if Terry G had directed. His stuff tends to be kinda twisted, I'm looking forward to his new one.
As for Columbus vs Cuaron, Columbus went for the side of HP that I read to my under-10 siblings, whereas Cuaron went for the darker, more mature aspects of the books. They're both very definitely HP, but Cuaron abridged it in such a way as to make it worth watching even if you had read the books, but Columbus made it sort of Disneyish and didn't add very much.

Cuaron's version was awesome! but he mabe me mad at some of the things he changed but ps/ss was the best movie ever! it introduced harry i dont think it was 'pedestrian' i mean the movies should grow...everyone that first fell in love with hp was 11 and 12 by the time the movies came out so had it had to be less 'adult' the hp kis were 11 and 12 also so...well you get my point!

I liked the 'feeling' and the set of the third movie better, but overall the first and second movies were most like the books. Actually, I would think the third movie more confusing if you'd never read the books.

i think they both did a okay job in making the hp films burt they both had flaws. chris stuk to books but he made the movies look to cookie cutterish were as alfonso he got it right with the chracters emotions and visually, but he made the movie too short and focused too much on the the different camera angles.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Roman J. Lupin First Year | GLEEk Magic Picture Finder I think Columbus like started the whole base of the movies, but they weren't the greatest. He got the movies started, but didn't really take them into the depth of things and I think Curan did that. PoA was highly criticised for the lack of the information on the Marauders (which I agree needed to be in there) and added a lot of things that wasn't in the books, such as the talking head (which I thought was highly annoying). However, he explored each of the characters and really seemed to show their true colors. I hope GoF will be just as good, I here they're taking out the Dursley scene completely, but hey, not everything is going to fit. And each director is going to bring somewhat their own personality in the film and their own little tidbits. Basically, what I'm getting to is I don't necessarily agree that Columbus' films were the worse, but they weren't the greatest, they were just there as an introduction really.

Well, I think Chris did a fine job for the first two books which weren't dark really at all. They were kind of sweet and innocent. The third one gets really dark with the dementors which represent depression, so Alfonso was perfect for it. And GoF is completely dark with the return of Voldemort. I'm kinda glad this guy didn't get the job of doing the first two. While they weren't terribly imaginative (books and films should be different, even if you are doing a film about a book) like Alfonso caught for PoA, they still did the job. But I would love to see what he'd do later as the books get darker. He can only have HBP though, because Joss Whedon for film 7!

well..i dont think so...Chris' versions were so close to the real thing we'd imagined from the books....Alfonso's was....not bad! To me tthe first two movies were kinda like the book come true...but i guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions...and if he thinks i dont care.
