| | | Teaching assistant quits job over Potter
Sariya Allen, a teaching assistant at Durand primary school, is seeking compensation for religious discrimination after having been disciplined for refusing to hear a child read a Harry Potter book. Quote:
Ms Allen refused to listen to her reading it because God had stated in the Bible that witchcraft was "an abomination". "The girl went home and told her mum. I also had told the teacher that I objected to hearing that book read because of my faith," Ms Allen said.
She claims that the first assistant headteacher, Mark McLaughlin, referred to her as "obstructive" and "rubbished" her faith. Quote:
"He was saying it's just my interpretation of the Bible and my view. He said 'these are your views and you're a minority because of these'. He thought I was quite extreme because I'm a born-again Christian. I'm a committed Christian," she said.

Elijah Wright Department of Mysteries | Bassoons galore! All I can say is, while this woman may have not wanted to hear the student read the book for her own religious beliefs, it doesn't mean she should've brought it to the student's attention. She could've just as easily said, "Well, I'd like it a bit better if you'd read me this book - it's one of my favorites!" vs. bringing her own personal/religious views into the classroom.

Sixth Year | Kitchen Seers/ICU James’ Girl/Sirius's too Im not sure what kind of school this is. If it were a public school in the USA then I would say she was in the wrong. Other wise I'm not sure as to the rules behind this. I think that the teacher could have listen to the student and taken care of the situation. I believe in freedom of speach but I don't know what guide this school. If it is a public school then she should have been informed that this would be part of her duties and if she had a religious objection it could have been delt with without envoleing students. I think it was poorly handled on all the adults parts. |

that is simply pathetic. i really dont believe that teachers should impose their beliefs and thoughts on their students deeply. they could express it but, in no way put to the students mind their own belief. we differ in these sense. so its really unethical to impose your thoughts into someone else's mind.
that teacher lacks the necessary briefing for life!!
seriously, she needs to get a life!

Hogwarts RPG Name: Callisto Maven | I can understand where she's coming from, but until she's actually read the books, she can't say anything. I'm a Christian, a committed one at that, but I'm not hating Harry Potter! On the contrary, I think it's great. It's just a story. The witchcraft she's talking about that is bad is not the turn-the-beetle-into-a-button magic.

I think she's too sensitive and serious with this. I'm a Christian, and I love Harry Potter and love reading the series!

Can I just ask, what point are they trying to make? So they say they don't like Harry Potter......and then what? They take up a case with a court, lose the case and make out that they've been terribly mistreated, and that the whole world is against them. With Harry Haters, the whole world ususally IS against them - the wizarding world, that is. So, then they target JK and call her a witch, like the UK newspapers report this attention seeking, over-religious drama queen said. GET A LIFE.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Alicia Cranberry | She's just like Laura Mallory, she just doesn't get it does she? Religion, Faith Harry Potter is FICTION. Also you could hardly call it Witchraft, merely, fantasy. Discriminators, Laura Mallory and Ms. Allen need to know this.

A teacher should be objective
It's completly reasonable that she doesnt want to read Harry, but she can't imposed her believes to others

Thats ridiculous. A teacher shouldn't impose their religious views on a student. They can have whatever views they want, but when they allow those views to get in the way of their job, they should be disciplined.
