Post Steve Kloves discusses splitting Deathly Hallows film in two

Steve Kloves, screenwriter for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films, sent an email to the Baltimore Sun, where he talks about the seventh movie's script, and how he came about writing two parts instead of one (as well as jokingly saying that he could have written three parts).

He first mentions that the fourth movie, Goblet of Fire, was considered to be split in two:

Quote:
"Years ago," he writes, "we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new."
Steve goes into detail about the process and challenges he went through for years to eventually consider breaking the seventh book into two parts:

Quote:
"As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I’m really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible. I’d love to do it in three parts!"
Deathly Hallows will release in November 2010 and May 2011.

I completely agree. This was my idea as well once I finished Deathy Hallows -- I knew there was NO way they could do the story justice and fit it neatly into one feature presentation. So excited!!

I do remember way back when GoF was being considered for a split and I didn't mind it at all.
That's a pretty hefty assumption. The break is because of post-production and sure they know they will make more money, and after all, that is what the industry is driven toward, but those aren't the reasons why I disagree with the decision. I just think creatively a succinct film could have been realised in one part. I think there are things in Deathly Hallows that could be let go of. But we shall see.

but good thing DH is gonna be split, that way, no cuts.
Again, I really don't think it's gunna work out that way. Which is good, in my book. But, you know, expectations and all that. I think they're being set a wee bit high. Like changing the length is going to solve every 'canon' problem in the movies.

And personally I'd like to see Chris Columbus come back and direct the last movie, he did such a great job with the first two.
David Yates is the director. I think the decision to not take a step backward, was a good one.

I hope we could see the chemistry was between Yates and Goldenberg, between Yates and Kloves too. We didn't see HBP yet and that me a little worried for DH.

I like the idea of it being two films, saves sitting in the cinema for 4 hours.

i am so happy to hear this will be in 2 parts. hopefully this will allow them to include each and everything that is in the 7th book. altho i wish david yates was not the director. i feel he rushed everything.

The downer is having to wait six months for the final installment.

The upper is that they can now include just about everything and not have to rush scenes due to time restraints.

Should be stellar, can't wait!
