| | |  Signed HP book set to be auctioned to support the Catie Hoch Foundation
Catie Hoch was a young girl who died from cancer. Before she passed on, she was an avid Harry Potter fan and loved it when her mother would read the novels to her. Catie, like Harry, was fighting for her life.
To symbolize this, Catie wore a long, red cape and big, black glasses, put lightning-shaped scar on her forehead, and carried a wand to one of her several treatments in New York City. She was ready, once again like Harry, to fight.
In January of 2000, Catie was back at home; her options of successful treatments were slim and her chances of reading the fourth Harry Potter novel were even worse. That was when J.K. Rowling heard about the little girl, and began to write to her.
In one of the first e-mails, Jo said, “I am working very hard on Book 4 at the moment,” and she talked about the chapter she was writing, some of the new creatures she'd created, and which characters were her favorite.
Shortly after Catie's ninth birthday in March, the doctors revealed that she only had a few weeks left to live. During the next month, Jo called and read to her Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which she'd finished writing, but it wasn't for sale yet. Catie died on May 18th, 2000, before she'd heard the end of the novel. The Catie Hoch Foundation was soon created to help give those children with cancer a break. The foundation also helps those families deal with the financial burdens of treatments and medical bills.
To help the Catie Hoch Foundation, all Harry Potter fans will have the chance to bid on a full set of the Harry Potter series, which are signed by J.K. Rowling. The bidding opens on September 1st, and you can read even more about the auction here. The winning bidder will be announced on Septemeber 29 at the Saratoga Auto Museum in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

^I don't think that comment is entirely appropriate for the news given but still...
I hope that that book goes for more that Ł10,000, that little girl was a strong kid. Rest in Peace hunny.

That is such a sweet thing for JKR to do. She really understands children and how important her story can be to them - it seems like communicating with one of her fans and reading the story to her would have kept Catie's spirits up somewhat, even in the situation she was in. I would love to bid but, unfortunately, am completely broke with college coming up next year. I KNOW they will raise loads of money for such a great cause, though! | |

That's too bad, it's just...really sad. Imagine if you were her mother. Reading to your daughter her favorite books (possibly), watching her having a lightning-shaped scar and black glasses with red cape and a wand, seeing her suffer from her soon-to-come death, watching the author read to your daughter...that must have been a very painful time. I really wish I can help by doing this.

that's a really inspiring story.
Hopefully this foundation will help many families.
i'm sorry to hear that Catie couldn't read the ending of the fourth book, or even the ending of the series. But i'm sure she's in a much happier place right now.
