* Short list of potential directors for films 5-7 - These guys were in talks for the job Summary:
These directors were in talks to direct Harry Potter at some point. Will the future Harry Potter films see any of these directing? Article:
This is an old article that I found while surfing looking for a quote by Spielberg on doing Harry Potter (way back when - before movie one was made): Quote: When Spielberg dropped out of this project, Warner Bros. started a "casting pool" process where directors could pitch their ideas for the film. Besides Columbus, the helmers in talks for the job at various points were: Terry Gilliam, Jonathan Demme, Mike Newell, Alan Parker, Wolfgang Petersen, Rob Reiner, Tim Robbins, Brad Silberling, and Peter Weir. Personally, I'd love to see Terry Gilliam do one! Yahoo! Movies UPDATE
And this article shows some of the same names: Quote: Among the would-be Potter helmers: Brad Silberling (City of Angels), Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), Chris Columbus (Bicentennial Man), Mike Newell (Pushing Tin), Rob Reiner (The Story of Us) and Tim Robbins (Cradle Will Rock). I also know that Kenneth Branagh was interviewed for the directing job of PoA.
Alan Rickman has also previously directed "A Winter's Guest" (starring Sean Biggerstaff and Emma Thompson) so possibly a collaboration between those two directing together might be a good choice.
I also think Emma Thompson who won a golden globe/BAFTA for her screenplay writing on "Sense and Sensibility" might also be able to script HP. She did a fantastic job on the Jane Austen novel so she has experience and her being a somewhat minor character it probably wouldn't interfere with her acting in the film.
I'd also like to see Alfonso back, possibly for one film, maybe the 5th as that appears to be an emotional story too, although there is qute a bit of action toward the end.
Wolfgang Peterson (King Arthur), Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) and Jerry Bruckheimer (Produced: Armageddon, Pearl Harbour, Pirates of the Caribbean and King Arthur) may be good choices too.

I'm a bit less enthused by the prospects of Mike Newell directing GoF. My expectations are pretty low at this point.

ooh the chap that did silence of the lambs might put an interesting angle on Hp...
I would have liked Tim Burton doing a Harry Potter...though he'd probably have recast Johnny Depp as Harry...and Hermione...and Ron.

I've never seen any of his work but I do think GoF is going to be a hard film to do, not because of the book size but because of the amount of action in it. It'll be hard for them not to turn it into a wholly action movie. I cant do action films lol they make me restless and bored, much like the quidditch does in the HP films. *hides*

im not too sure about mike newell too
he appears to be 'mad' and he is getting on quite a bit-
isn't he in his late 50s or so?
i wouldn't mind peter jackson (LOTR) directing a HP film either!!

I agree with you Em, I have always said that I hope Alfonso comes back for the 5th book. I personally dont want Chris Columbus to direct any of the remaining movies as I beleive that he is more of a family movie director, not suitable for the remaining books as they are a lot more mature.

I'm hoping neither Chris Columbus or Alfonso comes back, because their films just haven't been all that great. I wish Peter Jackson were shortlisted |

I am quite looking forward to seeing what Mike Newell does with GOF. I love Four Weddings and a Funeral, it has everything in that movie and he portrays the characters emotions really well. I think he might be a nice surprise. Let's hope so anyway as there are some fantastic parts in that book.

I would like to see a Tim Burton take, honestly. Especially on a book as dark as OotP. I think it would be a challenge for him, and I think we could expect some wonderous things coming out of it.

there have been big rumours about Mike newell doing GoF. I would love him to do it. I hated the third film so If Alfonso directs andother one I may not even go see it. But I liked the way Columbus did the first 2 and he and Mike Newell are more like, children's directors and Alfonso directs his films to a *ahem* older audience...I wouldn't suggest looking at all his films if you are under the age of 18. So I would like to see that same directing for the fourth movie. That is, more like Columbus.
I did like that Alfonso pans across though, whereas Columbus tended to go from headshot straight to headshot.
But we'll see soon enough!

Do you know who I'd like to direct the Harry Potter films? A true fan, someone who cared about the books, and cared about not letting the audience down. Like Peter Jackson with LOTR, we need a devoted HP fan to direct them. Not someone who is doing it for the sake of it being a Harry Potter film.

Well, why would we need it explained? I liked it that he wasn't repeating anything. He expected us to know what was going on and we did because we're the true book fans and that is who the films were made for.
He couldn't be literal, no director could, not even Jackson was exact to the LotR text.
