| | | Scholastic staff talk Harry Potter, confirm further anniversary editions
The Scholastic website has been updated with interviews with seven key members of staff. In the interviews they confirm that more anniversary editions of the books are on the way. They also talk about Deathly Hallows and the Tales of Beedle the Bard. Francine Colaneri: Vice President, Manufacturing and Corporate Purchasing: Quote: Since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out, which Scholastic book have you purchased the most paper for? And how does that compare to the amount for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? The Tales of Beedle the Bard requires 2,222,000 pounds; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows required 15 times as much paper.
Rachel Coun: Director of Marketing for Trade Hardcover Books and the Harry Potter Brand Director: Quote: What is your favorite personal story from your experience marketing Harry Potter?
I was visiting a friend in the hospital after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire got published. I noticed a little boy in the waiting room — his father was reading to him from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I happened to have some Harry Potter tattoos in my backpack (I still had them in my bag from the book launch!). I went over and gave some to the boy and his face just lit up. His dad wrote me a thank you letter and said that his son had to get minor surgery (he was fine) and all he spoke about before the procedure was "I have a Harry Potter tattoo." He said he wasn't scared going into the operation as he had HP on his mind. Truly, Jo Rowling has touched people in so many incredible ways!
Joanne Mojica: Vice President, Trade Planning & Analysis: Quote: Any additional interesting stories or information you want to share?
One of my most memorable moments was seeing my son's reaction when he met J. K. Rowling and she kissed his cheek and told him he reminded her of Harry Potter. He wasn't able to get the smile off his face for weeks!
Kris Moran: Publicity Director: Quote: What's the funniest or craziest invitation that J. K. Rowling ever received?
When people knew she was touring, there were always people who would invite her to their house for dinner or to sleep over, and I always found that really funny because they were totally serious and it wasn't just kids. I also loved the interview request from a knitting magazine — they thought she'd be interested because knitting was mentioned in the book.
David Saylor: Creative Director: Quote: Do you have any other interesting stories or information that you want to share?
A small but interesting tidbit I can reveal is that all of the character's signatures in the books are signed by people who worked on the books in some way. For example, I'm the signature for Sirius Black. And one of the signatures was contributed by a celebrity. Can you guess which signature is Rosie O'Donnell's? Hint: she's the parent of a lot of redheads.
Mark Seidenfeld: Legal Counsel: Quote: What has been the most surprising part of your experience working on Harry Potter?
The magnitude of this thing — it's a worldwide phenomenon that is watched so closely, and every step of the way seems newsworthy to the public. And at the same time, the personal intimacy that so many readers and fans feel towards Harry and Jo Rowling — how they can relate their own personal life story to Jo Rowling's or Harry's experiences and feel a connection. It's amazing.
Ed Swart: Vice President of Operations: Quote: Do you have any other interesting stories or information that you want to share?
How about a visualization — if you lined up the full trailers that delivered Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to our accounts' many distribution centers bumper to bumper, the line would be about 15 miles long. And a second, the most interesting delivery story was the need to use a horse and wagon on Mackinac Island in Michigan where they don't allow cars!

I was upset that i couldn't go to the reading in New York for PS/SS, but maybe I'll be able to go to one for the other books!
Great interviews. They were cute.

Saben Salazar Slytherin Magical Law Enforcement | How sweet: Awwwww. That was so sweet when that lady gave that little boy some tattoos she had. They made him so happy and right before he had to have surgery. It just goes to show that a little thing can make a big difference. But the thing about the signatures... That is pretty cool. I always wondered how they came up with them. I just thought JK Rowling made them up. |
