| | |  Rufus Scrimgeour possibly cut from Half-Blood Prince
In an interview that was conducted in July, which escaped our radar, David Yates talks about the possibility of Rufus Scrimgeour being cut from Half-Blood Prince. He also states that if the character does stay, he'd like Bill Nighy to play him. Quote: You worked with Bill Nighy in “Girl in the Café.” Don’t you think he’d make a great addition to the Potter films?
Oh man, I’m already there. The only problem is, we’re looking at the next adaptation and Rufus Scrimgeour, who takes over the Ministry of Magic from Fudge, we’re not sure if he’s going to be in the finished screenplay yet. We’re struggling with it at the moment, and he’s in one moment and he’s out the next. But if he stays in, I’m going to be on the phone quick as a shot to Bill and say, “Bill, come on, you’ve got to do this, man.”

We’ve already started developing the script, and we’ve started preproduction as well. So I do “H.P. Five” in the mornings and “[Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince]” in the afternoons at the moment. The next one’s going to be thrilling. The sixth book ends with a death again, which is very moving—but the actual story itself is very entertaining and fun. It’s very different than the fifth film, much more of a romantic comedy in many ways, which for me—and I think for Dan, Rupert, Emma, for all the young cast—it’s going to be a really cool gear change to make.
The script will have been locked by now, so they will know whether he's in it or not, although minor edits will still be made as shooting commences. We don't know either way yet - not a peep has been heard about any major casting for the sixth film.

I disagree. Scrimgeour isn't essential - they could easily use newspaper montages, as they did in OotP, saving time for more important plot points.

They said possibly so we're not sure. But I do hope they keep Scrimgeour. HBP is obviously not as long as OoTP so they can keep more scenes in.

I agree that Scrimgeour isn't necessarily essential, but I would like them to keep him in. I think it would be important for them to have that chat in the Weasley garden and him calling Harry "Dumbledore's man through and through."
Also, in DH, Scrimgeour goes over the will. Now, while they could easily cut him out of that as well and change that around, I still would be disappointed if they got rid of him altogether.
I'll agree with Emma in saying that if the only way he can come up without cutting him out completely is through those newspaper articles again, then so be it.
I only saw Bill Nighy as "Davy Jones" in the Pirates movie, but I thought he did a great job with that character, so I'm sure he'd be good as Scrimgeour. (Although, I admit, he doesn't fit the physical description...in my opinion.)

I suppose it would help them pick up a chunk of time that could be better spent on another, more important story/character, but I really want to see him in this movie. He needs to be a visible and recognizable character, for the ineptitude of the Ministry and the inability for people to trust their government is an EXTREMELY important theme. People who see this movie need to know who he is and connect him with the Ministry, so I very much hope they keep him in! | |
