| | | Rowling's teacher told her to write "grittier, real-life things"
Steve Eddy, J.K.Rowling's former English teacher at Wyedean comprehensive in Chepstow, has spoken about how he used to discourage the young writer from delving into fantasy. Quote:
“Joanne’s work always showed impressive imagination and in class she was always bright and enthusiastic, much in the way of Hermione in the Harry Potter books,” he said.
“But when it came to her stories they were always about elves or pixies or fairies. I was constantly telling her that she was at an age where she should be writing about grittier, real-life things.
“Thank goodness she never heeded my advice and kept presenting me with her fantastic stories about made-up creatures. Looking back I am a bit embarrassed about it but I had no idea what she’d go on to achieve.”
Quote:
“I’m extremely glad she didn’t heed my advice. Teacher, it seems, doesn’t know best.”
“Back then, I’d never have thought she’d be this best- selling author. I tell my students that there is hope for all of them because of this.”
Quote:
“I feel proud if I was in some way responsible for having influenced her to write the Potter stories.
“I’ve read all her books and was enraptured, though I notice she still makes mistakes with her punctuation. But structurally her work has improved beyond recognition.”

How dare he feel proud when he was the one telling her to write grittier, real-life things. He did nothing to help her.
Jo is a talented writer and she did all of HP by herself

Ah, she stayed true to what she wanted to write. I'm glad she did, if not, there wouldn't be such a successful Harry Potter franchise.

Like that matters now. She's a quadrillionare, does a misplaced semi-colon really make a difference?
It is true how many teachers like this tend to stifle creativity rather than cultivate it. But, if you start to think about the HP series, you really begin to see that it IS gritty and it IS real. It's just a world that we don't live in, you know? But it's real to JKR because she has this world in her mind and knows the ins and outs of it, and it's gritty because she gets down to the darkest, most evil bits of that particular world.

Heh. I see her books as very gritty, and I don't even categorize them as fantasy, despite all the magic and stuff. They're a lot more realistic than half the books claiming to be realistic fiction, IMO.
Glad she didn't listen to him! |

The punctuation remark was so funny! it's a major problem, isn't it?
