| | | Roald Dahl Vs Jo Rowling
With the UK release of 'Charlie and the Chocolate factory' and the start of Accio 2005 (the UK's first Potter conference) today, The Scotsman has produced an article comparing the two authors; Roald Dahl and J.K.Rowling. The piece features the opinions of leading authors and children's literature experts. Quote: Nicola Morgan, winner of the 2005 Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year Award for Sleepwalking
"It's a long time since I read them, but I liked The BFG and I liked Matilda a lot. I liked all of them really, but it would be hard to compare them with JK Rowling - like comparing roast beef to meringue and raspberries."
Quote: Lindsey Fraser, former head of the Scottish Book Trust
"What they both do so successfully is look their reader right in the eye. That's why Harry Potter will continue to be successful and why Dahl has been so successful.
"With Rowling, it's really difficult because the narrative in the six books hangs together so well and, in some ways, the stories have all merged into one for me.
Some scenes, such as describing the Weasley's joke shop in the new book, she doesn't really have to include, because they are not essential to the story, but I wouldn't want her to cut them at all.
One episode that has always stuck with me is Harry seeing his parents in the mirror. The shape of the story changes with every bit she adds.
Going back to read them again when I came to review the new book really brought it home to me just how very well written they are."
Quote: Karen Mountry, Children's Programme Director at the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2005
"What I really liked about the Dahl books - and it's true of the Harry Potter books too - is the triumph of children over adults, the way they solve problems in quite imaginative ways, applying their intellect and imaginations."
Quote: Kathryn Ross, The Scotsman's children's books specialist
"They're very different, but both have a fantastic sense of humour that's wicked and well developed. That sense of humour appeals right across the age ranges - they don't have to go for the schoolboy humour, although Dahl was certainly capable of that.
They both have that secret thing that makes children want to read more, and they have a voice that appeals to the reader - if we knew what it was then a lot more people would be really successful writers. Whatever it is, they both have it in bucketloads."

I would be hard press to choose between the two as well. I think in the end I would go with Jo because HP is seven book compared to one. I get to read more, plus I've grown just like the trio. Both authors are great writers.

It's an analogy. Comparing Dahl and Rowling is like trying to compare roast beef and meringue and raspberries; it's just not possible! Quote:
anyone any suggestions?
For Dahl? Matilda, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr Fox are my favourites.
It's hard to compare them also because one is a series whereas the other has written many children's books.

Violet Becker Accidents & Catastrophes | "It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not." That is cool that they are comparing the two authors. I loved this one book by Roald Dahl, but I am drawing a blank on the name. It was about this boy who gave his grandmother this concoction that he made and was pretending that it was her medicine. It was a rather funny book. Can't remember the name....hmmm....

Hogwarts RPG Name: Fiona Renée Oliveraux | I'm sure Dahl lovers will hate me for this, but I really think that JK's books have more appeal to an older audience. I read Dahl as a child, but when I recently picked up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory again I thought, "How was I ever interested in this?" because it was just so light and childish.
I'm an adult, and JK's books still appeal to me because, I think, the characters themselves are aging, so the stories age and progress to deeper, darker levels. The story, essentially, stays the same, so younger children have something interesting and familiar, but adults have something new and fun, and that generally diverges from what most adult's novels are like. Therein lies the draw to JK's books, I think.
Sorry for making such a rambling post.

For me it'd be impossible to pick one as a better writer than the other. Dahl is more for children than adults, but I still read them, and my dad enjoyed reading them to me when I was younger. JK Rowling's kind of span all generations. I like both of their's dark humor, too.

Dahl doesn't just write childrens books. Other things like Skin or The Umbrella Man and several others are ment for older generations. I enjoy those stories much more than his younger works. They have a much larger amount of twisted humor and plots.

| I've never read Roald Dahl, but it was JKR who brought me back into books. Talent, according to me can and should never be compared. It's an individuality that is quite difficult to compare. I must agree with Karen Mountry and Kathryn Ross Quote: They both have that secret thing that makes children want to read more, and they have a voice that appeals to the reader - if we knew what it was then a lot more people would be really successful writers. Whatever it is, they both have it in bucketloads Very true. The addictive element, that makes you want more remains a mystery!

I love them both. I think it is a good comparison. I mean Dahl's very talented and has been successful for a long time. I think Rowling has worked very hard and will continue to be great and better then Dahl. She is so talented and has really connected the books so well. I can't wait to see what other stories she will write after the final Harry Potter book!!!

| Roald Dahl books were what shaped my childhood really. I grew up reading the BFG and Witches and Matilda and I think I couldn't have picked anything better. Family morals and the power of love always seem to thrive somewhere in the deep morals of the books, and the same goes for Harry Potter. Now, Harry Potter is shaping my teen years. Not necessarily because I don't have those morals already permenantly instilled my brain, but because I think that everyone should be passionate about something. That's Harry Potter and writing for me. I have someone I look up to that's not my parents and is still alive (thank Heavens). Not to go all philosophical, but I think that passion, is the essence of life. It makes life fun. |
