| | | Quote of the Week - Ralph Fiennes
While promoting the release of his theatrical directorial debut, Coriolanus, actor Ralph Fiennes commented to the U.K.'s Daily Record on what pushed him to take on the role of Lord Voldemort - his nephews and nieces (which includes Hero Tiffin, who portrayed Tom Riddle as a child in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). Quote:
Fiennes said: "I was approached but didn’t really know the franchise and hadn’t read the books – I was kind of ignorant about it. It was only because I have nieces and nephews who said I must do it.
“Also, Mary - a wonderful woman and incredibly tenacious casting-director - just wouldn’t stop.
“I have no regrets. I enjoyed the first one in which I starred. The second, I wasn’t so sure I enjoyed making it at the time but I loved the last two.
“The part of Voldemort was fantastic and I loved the way director David Yates pulled it together. It would be an exaggeration to say I was sad to see the franchise come to an end, I think everyone felt it had come to its natural conclusion and it couldn’t really be strung out much longer."

I'm glad he has no regrets. Now that I've seen him in the role, I truly couldn't imagine anyone else playing Voldemort.

Ralph Fiennes’ performance is one of my favorites in DH2. Watching Voldemort become more and more frantic as he tried to kill Harry was awesome. When he killed the goblins after the trio stole Hufflepuff’s cup, the fear on Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco’s faces was palpable. Seeing him covered in blood as he walked through the goblins’ bodies was really chilling. For me, he demonstrated his complete madness when Hermione destroyed Hufflepuff’s cup. I remember him turning towards the Death Eaters. One of them (Pius?) started to speak and Voldemort immediately AK’ed him. I thought it was a brilliant performance by Fiennes!

interesting. I think it's funny that almost (if not all) of the older actors in the cast were 'persuaded' to take on their roles by the young children in their families; be it their children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews.

One thing I love about Ralph is that he's blunt, sharp-witted, says what's on his mind, darn the torpedoes if you don't agree with him. And he's right about the franchise reaching its natural end. We didn't want it to happen, but we knew it did.
I remember when they started casting the films I said right off the bat that Ralph would make THE perfect Voldemort. So many other people I knew said there was no way he would ever accept a role in a Harry Potter film. If I had bet money on him, I'd be so rich by now!

I'm glad that he took on the role of Lord Voldemort despite not having known of the HP franchise beforehand.

Interesting that he said he didn't really like working on OOTP. I suppose that's because Voldemort's role was really just an action part, and while it's such a bloody awesome fight, it must be a bit annoying for a serious actor like Ralph Fiennes to spend a whole week on a movie surrounded by explosions and huge wind machines blowing on his face, with only a couple actual lines to say. GOF and the DH movies were definitely much more performance-oriented.

Plus a lot of green screen work, and having to make it look like your wand is shooting out huge jets of light, plus pretending to breath a giant fireball....for actors who generally don't do a lot of that kind of work it can be a bit disconcerting
