Former English rugby player and actor Martin Bayfield spoke about his participation in the Harry Potter series, in which he doubles for Robbie Coltrane's character, Hagrid:

How did you end up acting in the Harry Potter movies?
I got a call from someone at Warner Brothers who had seen me speaking at a lunch. He said they were looking for a Robbie Coltrane double. I gave him a hard time at first because I thought he was a wind-up merchant. I’ve been in five films so far and we are about to start filming the last one. It was great to meet the late Richard Harris on set because he was such a huge rugby fan.

I never even knew Hagrid had a double... Can't imagine what he would need one for?

Doubles generally just stand in for set ups and back shots.

A double is someone who physically resembles the actor playing a part and is generally used to prevent the actors from using up their energy just standing around while the cameras and lights are set up or for when their face doesn't need to be seen.
