Eric D. Randall is a father who read the Harry Potter novels to his daughter frequently. The more that he read to her, the more questions that she had. One day, Julia requested that someone create a dictionary with just those words in it ... so her father did.
They spent two years (20 minutes a day) on it, and now it's avaliabe for sale: “The Pottersaurus: 1,500 Words that Harry Potter Readers Need to Know.”
Randall is quoted saying that the humor in the books just isn't the same when you don't understand the bigger words.

“That’s the type of humor that you would miss if you just skimmed over the words you didn’t know,” Randall said.

“J.K. Rowling did not dumb down these books at all,” Randall said.

“It would be great if kids could get over the habit of just skipping the words they don’t know, and, instead, actually look them up. It could be a great learning experience,” Randall said. “I hope it becomes more than just a reference book.”
I, personally, think that it's very cool that one man would go out of his way to make this possible. Go him!
