| | | Potter helps fantasy revitalisation MSNBC has a short article discussing fantasy and the shifting of the genre in the last thirty years. Quote:
With no new "Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Potter" films this season, where does one get a fantasy fix? Dungeons & Dragons, the paper-and-pencil role-playing game, continues to draw a cult following as it turns 30.
Quote:
The introduction of new rules four years ago that simplified gameplay, the "LOTR" and "Potter" franchises and a popular line of D&D-themed novels by R. A. Salvatore have revitalized the brand.

Fantasy lit has always been out there. I work with a child now who's parents don't want him to have ANY fantasy reading due to religious reasons ... do you know how hard it is to find a book for children that isn't fantasy related and isn't as dull as dirt?

idk why fantasy could oppose religion, isnt it kinda like imagination? in fantasy anything can happen, and when you imagine you can .. imagine anything? idk, things like that lol. but fantasy books are awesome, i read either those or the "contemporary" ones about teens drama etc ...

yeah, fantasy is awesome. it inspires us to dream of different worlds where we can hide from our dull day to day activities. having fantasy books is wonderful, and i'm proud that harry is helping us with this so much.

No kidding... when I'm not at school I work at a little bookstore and I have some parents who are so enthusiastic about sharing HP, LOTR, the Narnia chronicles, the Prydain chronicles, etc with their kids and others who, as soon as I say anything about fantasy or magic or witches, looks horrified. It's for FUN people... if you raise your kids right they'll have imagination and not go out and become satanists. Really.

I can't believe so many people still associate "magic" with "unchristian/satanic" - this is a belief from the middle ages that started to die out in the 18th century or so! And now we're living in the 21st century and a shocking number of folks still have such backward opinions...
