Potter fans read till their "eyes pop out"

The Desert Sun has an article about a summer reading programme in which kids spent all their time reading.

More than 100 kids at the La Quinta clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of Coachella Valley spent their summer reading, including 10 year old Jared Reed, who read Sorcerer's Stone.

Quote:
Jared Reed read for 32 hours for fun.

His book of choice was "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone."

"The story is really cool," he said.

He enjoyed the book so much that he tried to read as much as he could in one sitting.

"Once I get into the middle of a story, I want to read more," said Reed, 10.

"You want to read till your eyes pop out," he said.

I agree with him, after I read OOTP twice, I had my eyes re-tested and they had got worse, I thought it was a coincidence but not I'm not so sure!
I actually had to buy new lenses for my glasses, so I better be prepared for HBP, and I am hoping I'm not blind by the 7th book - because that would seriously suck!

Yes, you will have to read it to me, because anything will be better than having Stephen Fry gassing in my lug-hole for hours on end - ahh, why can't Alan Rickman read the books, now I could definately deal with that!

Kids liking Harry Potter is great and what it's all about - except for big kids like me who doesn't actually want to grow up!

And oh yeah *melts* to the Rickman vioce!...

And well I still see the HP books as adults books too, lets face it there are soo many adults that like em too! ...thats what I hate about DK - In DK many just thinks of HP as childrens books - and they are sooo much more!

Eyes should literaly pop out when reading Harry Potter books. Honestly, it's so addictive. I read each books at least 3 times in a week that I bought the books.
In my case, not just my eyes but my brains should pop out too. I keep reading and reading them until I memorize the entire book.
Not word by word though...yet...I'm working on it.
LOL I'm mad.

I will read HP over and over again until my eyes pop out too!! :online2long: But hearing it read from Alan Rickman would be oh so nice.......*drool*
On the American audio versions a guy named Jim Dale reads them and I have had many customers in my store that I work at (media play) tell me how well he reads the stories.
As for HP being kiddie books...B.S.!! I'm almost 22 and I'm considered an adult and I am obsessed all the way!!

**I agree fairladyHermione they are so addictive!!! I can't get enough of 'em!!

Sorry, my mind is still thinking about the 'Alan Rickman' narrative....

Oh yeah... Eyes popping out:
The books are addictive fairladyhermione. But I think it's because everyone, young and old can relate to the books too, because they cover every aspect of life as well as the magical side which to me, is just perfect escapism.

I don't think I have ever really picked up a book before the Harry Potter series and really wanted it to be real. Im 26, and I'm still wanting it to be real!

I agree 100%!!!! If I could choose any book-world to live in, it would be HP. If not for them then probably LotR. I hold HP close because reading these books helped me out of a very rough spot in my life!!

Well that is brilliant, it's perfect escapism then isn't it! Because the books can just take you away and thats what I love most about them.

Hey, if we believe it is real, it is real.
I strongly stick to that. Why not? Almost anytings possible in this 'highly-advanced- technological-world' of ours now.
It's all in the IMAGINATION I always tell myself, "imagination is your own. Keep it and be different or lose it and be a clone."

I think that reading Harry Potter have also made my eyes bad. Once i started reading them a 4 years ago, my eyes have started to suffer. I have short sightedness. I was told that i had to wear glasses. I have to wear my glasses all the time. I read my Harry Potter books all the time also and i recently went to the optician for a check up last week to be told that my left eye is getting worse and that i have to get a new pair of specs. Coincidence or what? But i still dont think that ive learnt my lesson cause i still read them all the time. I cant believe it took that boy 32 hours to read Philosophers Stone, it only takes me maybe about half a day. I mean i know he is young but even my little brother took less time than that and hes not a great reader. But at least he did something that was educational during the summer and never really escaped school. Talking about school i still have coursework to do before i go back so i better shut up. Wait, i'll do it tomorrow [a phrase that i have been using for the last three weeks]. If i do go blind because of reading to many Harry Potter books, I wonder if they release it in braille! :sorcerer:

I completly agree, I love reading the Harry Potter books, it's hard to find a book you don't wanna stop reading untill your are done with it, and I've done that with all five of the books. I can't wait for Half Blood Prince to some out.

theyre captivating!! unfortunately no1 at home reads HP so im forced to talk on HP sites rather than to my hp-illiterate family but im fine with it hehe that means i dont have to share this world with my family =) well they've seen the movies (although i was the only one who saw PoA) but anyway..

thirty two hours isnt a lot compared to my 11-year old brother who hates reading he wouldn't even finish SS, im sorry to say he'd give up before then. they should release it in braille! even if i can still see i think it'd be cool to learn braille, cuz then i can read in the dark

such a long post, im sorry lol

okay i swear i will not come back to this forum cuz more people are reading, therefore they will post and i will keep adding to this already long post lol... but this was added while i was fixing my long post

lol i can imagine us like that! i remember when GoF came out i was reading late at night and my dad would continue coming to my room in the middle of the night, telling me to go to sleep and (when i wouldnt) to look away every 10 min or something to stretch the eye muscles or chastising me for reading too close.. not that i listened and i got landed with glasses with a higher prescription thing lol

I so agree with the article! If I could, I'd read all five books in one sitting, but my eyes kill me after an hour of reading and I need to stop for a little while. Hopefully I'll be able to read faster once the seventh book comes out!!! *crosses fingers*

When I read the 4th book 4 the first time it was during the school year and it was a school night ant it was about 12 and my dad had been telling me lights out every ten minutes and finally i did and I pulled out a flash light and read till 3 in the morning and I was soooo tired  I had trouble seeing the next day and drifted in and out during class that das and I got home and I fell asleep on the couch. so the morale of the story is ALWAYS READ HARRY POTTER TILL 3 IN THE MORNING AND NEVER REGRET IT! And I dont!
